Incidentally, I don't even know that we ARE 100% responsible- some of it may be natural- we may just be contributing to a natural rise in temperature (quickest rise known to man).
I just see it as next to impossible that with all our deforestation, industry, heat-centre cities, ecological manipulations, aeroplane contrails, etc- we're not having SOME affect.
What would it take to prove that climate change is caused by man?
Now that even the previously skeptical are finally admitting climate change is happening- how do we prove that man is responsible- what would it take?
To me it seems like evolution- where no matter how much evidence and proof we collect there remains those that keep on saying "well- I don't believe it so nah!"
Perhaps it isn't coincidental that those that deny evolution always seem to be the same ones that deny the impact man is having on the environment.
So- what does it take- what will it take to prove man is having an impact on the environment- or is this just one of those issues that no matter how much evidence we find- it will still be denied?
150 years from now, if my anti-aging drugs allow me to live that long- and I sit on oceanfront property in West Virginia- will the young whipper snappers that get on my lawn be thinking that global warming has nothing to do with man?
Yes but if you push it down hill does it magically have a built in "perpetual motion" machine like the "robot" from yesterday that uses "no energy source"?
No?
What if you drop it off a tall cliff? Can it magically go downwards then without giving it an external energy source?
Indeed- many things I read on slashdot I read online elsewhere the week before.
(I still come over to the story to compulsively comment even if I have nothing useful to say)
I don't mind the delay- gives me time to gather my thoughts on the issue first.
I've got a great article on Microsoft's next OS, Windows 7, I'm planning on submitting tonight- supposedly it's going to fix all the problems in Vista...

Aha, thank you for the enlightenment. That's actually not a bad trick.
No, but I really think they should have gone for something more subtle and less "wacky".
It shows they read the rider- but not that they paid attention to it. Something as wacky as no brown M&Ms stands out and is easily remembered.
Yes, they'll remember something as wacky as that - but then they'll forget the mundane details.
They should have used some other less wacky parameter if they wanted to test if attention had been paid.
I think there is room for both humor and deep conversation. I certainly spend more time on slashdot for both the above than I probably should.
I'm amazed anyone can let themselves get wound up over a light-hearted comment about a publicly traded corporation. Especially one meant in jest and with no malicious intent.
I drive a toyota- I love my toyota- but if someone makes a joke about toyota, I'll probably laugh and move on- mostly because the gas pedal sticks and I have no other choice.
I know it's a joke...... but just want to point out that the dinosaurs -> petroleum thing is mostly a myth- most of the oil came from microscopic organisms not dinosaurs.
I use Avira on the highest setting. I've probably had 2 false positives in the last 12 months. Probably about 5 in the 2 or 3 years I've been using it.
It may only be on the free version- also it depends on what web-browser you use.
I notice the toolbar doesn't show up on chrome... It does on IE (even though I don't typically use IE at home)- I had to google how to remove it without disabling Avira.
If you use IE, have the free version, and don't have the Ask tool bar/haven't removed it- is your antivirus up-to-date?
If I'm shredding something especially sensitive- I usually put the shredded paper in with the same bag as the kitty litter.
Doesn't make reassembling the documents any easier- but if any crook goes to the trouble of doing that... maybe they deserve access to my security codes.
For how long though? With so many non-traditional computer devices being embedded with Linux flavours- how long until more and more people start targeting Linux.
A virus that leaps from your phone to your cable box to your computer to you thermostat to your electric car would not be fun.
Last year Avira flagged the ASK toolbar as "malware/spyware".
Fast forward 6 months and not only is ASK toolbar nolonger flagged as malware/spyware but all of a sudden Avira has a partnership with ASK and install it by default and it's a pain in the neck to remove it without getting rid of Avira.
Avira's actually a pretty decent free anti-virus... but they sold their soul to the devil.
The ones borrowing the cars are still arsehats. Deaf people though (and others with perhaps non-immediately apparant handicaps) are still validly handicapped and getting to the store could present a hazard to them.

How can we not?

If it works with salt water then you're not taking away drinking water...
In fact by combining the Oxygen and Hydrogen seperated afterwards you can get safe drinking water from a non-safe source (such as the ocean)

The TSA needs to be given greater powers to frisk and abuse people!
Anyone who lives within 5miles of an overhead flight path MUST submit to random frisking by TSA officials to make sure they are not carrying lasers.
Well, apple does have a patent out on being the leading smart phone company- so by being #1, Samsung is in clear violation of that patent.
Good to see the scientists are being so disCERNing.
This coin is useless unless I can unwrap it and there is chocolate inside.

Hello Australia...
TRICK OR TREAT!!!!!!
Why both going through 128 and 256 bit?
Just make the leap up to 1024 bit! It's inevitable eventually...

Am I the only person who thinks this will be used more oft for nefarious purposes rather than for good?
Obviously they don't use MC Hammers search engine at the Avira office.
Avira let's you pick the level of sensitivity- the highest sensitivity has the most false-positives. There are about 5 or 6 levels of sensitivity.
Personally I'd rather a false positive every once in a while than to ever get a false negative.

I just googled the thing with deaf people and it looks like it varies state by state.
In my state (which I happen to agree with on this) deaf people can park in handicapped spots- as they should for increased safety
I didn't mean to say that was a valid excuse.
The ones borrowing the cars are still arsehats. Deaf people though (and others with perhaps non-immediately apparant handicaps) are still validly handicapped and getting to the store could present a hazard to them.
I hacked a satellite once- Toshiba isn't very good on security.
Awesome she found him.
Where has he been hiding all these years then?
