100 is not a large sample size. If you flipped a coin 10,000 times and got heads 6,000 times then yes- that would indicate heads is more likely than tails.
BTW- there is not an even 50% chance of heads and tails in real life- there is always a miniscule advantage to one side or the other depending on the coin.
What makes you think that is genetic? I would say there is a large play of culturalism in that. There is a big cultural push that "blacks should play sports" and "whites should study in school".
If there are more blacks in sports it is because more grow up in poor economic stations where sport is seen as a viable escape from poverty.
Look at race car drivers- almost no female drivers- yet there is no reason why women should not be as good as men (no female driver jokes please) - the reason more men become professional race car drivers is that more take it seriously when young so the pool is bigger.
Culturally- blacks are pushed more into athletics. The pool of black atheletes is higher.
Gosh! That sounds exactly the type of thing those very same Germans were trying to say!
Are there genetic differences between races? ABSOLUTELY.
HOWEVER, test scores and all sorts of measurements over the years have shown that socio-economic standing and other factors are WAY more important than race. Race, if a factor, is not a major factor in intelligence- certainly not enough to sway such a big gap.
Even if this were true- we would already have weeded out the "non-bookworm" type. By becoming a scientist instead of any one of a number of career paths, you'll likely be a "bookworm gene" carrier.
Suggestions of "black sounding names" and "black universities" are mentioned. However, with so many blacks NOT having "black-sounding names" this just seems like too big a gap between blacks and white to be purely from that. It would have to mean that those deciding would have to be the biggest racists...
... and perhaps they are- I suspect those who decide are probably older established scientists and studies have shown racism is higher in older generations.
I would prefer to believe (even though it may not be true) that this is more "cultural"- that black scientists are chosing research topics that are not as "culturally appealing" to white review board members... and no, I mean nothing racist by that... There is a cultural and even somewhat a linguistic divide between blacks and whites, and even sub-populations between and ACROSS races- and perhaps their choice of words, or what they value as important research topics disagree...
Just throwing out a "I'd like to believe" statement- I think racism is overall more likely.
I, like many other people, thought it was a great novel with multiple sub-plots, great character building, a surprise ending and "psychologically" interesting.
I read the sequels hoping for equal enjoyment but they're all trout! I think Card could only write one good book on the subject.
They've been saying 6 degrees of seperation since the earth had 5bill people (probably before that). Surely with 2 billion more people on the planet now it has to eventually go up to 7 degrees (although, I know it will be exponential how population would need to go up per degree).
Anonymous's theoretical view is that anyone can join.
That means they will attract both "good" and "bad" (and perhaps some "ugly"). Therefore "more constructive pursuits, " whatever that may be- will be followed, as will more dumbarse pursuits, more juvenile pursuits, and more lulzish pursuits.
You have to think what type of people will be attracted to the un"organization" to see what direction it will take.
Outright criminals are unlikely- no profit. Professionals are unlikely Bored, younger, tech-savy singles are most likely
I suspect therefore their targets in general are going to continue to be more for the mischievious and disruptful.
Until the Queen appears in a blockbuster film wielding a light sabre... I don't think she belongs on the coin... even if she is a member of the darkside Royal family.
Shouldn't be too surprising- livebearing shows up in all sorts of families that typically lay eggs- especially aquatic animals.
Everyone is familiar with the humble guppy. You buy one for your daughter despite your better judgement- one week later you're overrun with the gaudy ugly fish as the live young start popping out everywhere.
Many species of snail give birth to live young. Or "nearly so". Malaysian Trumpet snails and Quilted Melania two "cloning" species can pop out up to 9 live babies at a time. Even sexually reproducing snails can give live birth- species of Tylomelania from Sulawesi lay a single egg at a time that disolves before your eyes (if you're lucky) to reveal a minature snail.
That doesn't mean live-bearing fish or mollusks are common- and if this dino gave live-birth, it doesn't mean that it was common with dinosaurs either.
I would personally hate if someone always called me about every mundane detail in their life.

Sorry, just feel it necessary at this moment to point out that I am enjoying a nice cup of tea after a blissfull pee.
Cool... Does having spider-silk skin give you the ability to walk up walls- have "spidey senses" and dates with um... whatshername- that red headed girl that played Mary Jane.
I'm 33 and I'm already beginning to worry about the future of programming. Basically, I estimate I've got another 45 years or so before I retire (age expectancy and retirement age both keep going up- so I'm guessing it will be mid-late 70's by the time I retire).
Although the countries we outsource to may change- I think outsourcing will become bigger and bigger- especially as being on-site becomes less important. Technology is only going to make it easier and easier to program (90% of applications at least).
I'm guessing I have what, about 10 years left before I start to face a struggle with employment? I think getting a masters degree is my next step- simply because I see my choices as- get into management or die. (well not die... but suffer a career death).
The problem with programming is- it is hard to get out of (at least and still be paid the same/similar). Upper management at most places don't promote programmers. If you want to move up the chain you're given much better opportunities typically if you're in accounting or sales. My advice to anyone considering a career in IT: DON'T.
Hate being early thirties and already feeling this jaded.
I'm glad the police can use this technology THIS TIME- although it is quite scary that it is progressing so much (and who knows when it will be used for less approvable scenarios). What the police have today corporations and criminals will have tomorrow (or is it the other way around). You can't escape it either. I stay away from Facebook and the like- but the fact that I'm a hot sexy beast means other people take photos of me and post it online. Even though I actively stay away from Facebook and other sites that catalogue my life- I'm still exposed via others.

Even if it is not going to hit earth we'll at least see if this idea works should we need to REALLY do it in the future.
Good way for China to practice stuffamagig in space.
I know someone who has done research on this that will put the aliens to shame.

I heard about it watching the Holy Grail.

Wow... part of the biggest vacuum cleaner in all history. At least God doesn't use old fashioned wheeled vacuum cleaners...
Black Holes- vacuum cleaners steered using Dyson Spheres.
Sorry... my jokes suck today.
Being warm-blooded isn't that much of a surprise- we've known birds descended from warm-blooded dinosaurs for decades.
More science, please.
This is where I first read the story... a little bit more science but not much:

I just hope the security is good enough that hackers don't figure out how to hack those suits.
