Once someone writes the WinAmp plugin, you won't have to go to the planetarium for the Pink Floyd laser light show!

Man--given how heated DeCSS has gotten, I cringe at the thought of how, uh, unhappy some huge organizations are going to be with this one.

Bah, on second though, we're only talking about ATM machines, no big deal.

Insanity, wrap your warm and arousing arms around me and keep away the cold, pallid tendrils of sanctioned normalcy. Let the insane create, innovate and explore and leave the sane to sit in their offices counting numbers and selling their soul so they can go home and feed the mouths of their offspring for one more day. And insanity, for whatever humanity you posses, give their children the privilege to avoid normalcy so that they might enjoy life to its fullest.

My, what a marvelously romantic, naive view of bipolar disorder and mental illness in general. I'm sure that those who have lost their livelihoods, their homes, estranged from their families, living on the fringes of society, shunned and scorned by most folk who encounter them, would feel exactly the way you do.

I agree, there may be a tendency for some to medicate anything which strays from the norm; however, when your mind fractures, all is not sweetness and light.

Ask damn near anyone who actually suffers as a bipolar (or from any other similar disorder), and they'll probably have a markedly different opinion. I urge you to do some reading, learn more about these issues.

  5. Re:Hooray!!! For now, what next? on Victory in Holland · · Score: 1

I'm very happy that enough citizens in Holland had the intelligence and common sense to defeat this measure. However I feel that it will be short lived given the political, cultural climate of the community.

It was, in fact, a very encouraging vote. And, as someone who lives here in Holland, I actually wasn't that surprised it failed. Yes, it's a hard, hard core conservative area, but that doesn't mean we're all yokels here. While folks hereabouts are genuinely concerned about all manner of moral and ethical issues, at the same time, we've got a decent bit of common sense, and we especially don't like other people dictating what we should or shouldn't do. At least, that's the case for enough of us that this issue's settled.

55% is pretty danged decisive; when you take a look at the totals for overall Ottawa county, where the staunch Republicans overwhelmingly (2:1) voted for Bush, there is no question but a significant number of 'em must've voted down the library filters--there's no way it would've lost otherwise.

All told, not a bad moment for our li'l ol' bastion of conservatism here in SW Michigan ;)

Hope College, in Holland, MI, is *not* a CRC college. It's affiliated with the Reformed Church in America, which, while it has a similar name, is a completely different (and considerably more liberal) denomination. Calvin College in GR is so uptight y'all don't evne have a football team :) Now, as a Holland resident m'self, I can't say I've ever heard anyone use the term city fathers. Mind you, that's not to say it isn't a staunch conservative stronghold here--that, it most definitely is. However, we don't have laws against holding hands in public, mandatory gun-ownership, or restrictions against buying beer on Sunday. Uh, wait, we do have that last one, sorry.
