  1. Alien Technology I tell you! on Google Plans an IPO · · Score: 1

I love google. It is the best thing to hit the internet lately. I have a theory that google is using some Alien Technology...how else can you explain the sub 500ms response time? :-)

  2. Re:Scary on Cyc System Prepares to Take Over World · · Score: 1

"I've formed opinions about a great many things, and some of those opinions contradict what a lot (or all) of my friends and family think"

Forming an opinion is fun for discussion sake, and I do believe we are all guilty of it here. But without the fine tuning that comes from a large database in making an opinion how practical or useful can it be? Do we really want computers thinking like us? I don't. I want them to be able to make very reliable decisions based on the highest quality of infomation available. Cyc is a very good first step forward in this direction.

  3. Cheating hurts online gaming on Asus Request Feedback on "Cheat" Drivers · · Score: 1

I remember battling an online cheater back in the days of Quake 1. I remember hitting him several times with the rocket launcher with no power ups or health in site for him to get. The guy would not frag...ever. At that point it became discouraging and I left online game play to use bots instead. I think this is why many developers are now putting more emphasis back into the single player experience. Of course CS would counter that argument but there are lots of players like myself that would play CS if it had decent bots. When UT came out with its excellent bots it was a breath of fresh air! No LPBs and no cheating just raw fun!!!

  4. V22 on Software Problem Linked to Osprey Crash · · Score: 5

Back in early 90's I worked for a defense contractor that was involved with the testing of the V22's engines. I remember sitting in a meeting and looking at some of the mechanical drawings and saying to myself, "glad I'm not the test pilot". It is a very complicated design. Most military aircraft like the V22 have quadruple redundant electronic systems and even the engine ECUs will talk to each other and monitor the one that is currently in charge and if the others determine that the main ECU is malfunctioning the other three will vote to remove it. Very complicated algorithms. Also to maintain that both rotors have power with one engine failing a high speed drive shaft is used to transfer power from the good engine to the transmission on the side that lost power. The drive shaft has a very small diameter but would spin at something like 10,000 rpms. Low torque but high power. The designers are thinking about safety and I think this bird can work its just not being funded with the enthusiasm of the old cold-war projects.

  5. The Russians need the money on Politics Without Geopolitical Boundaries? · · Score: 1

I think that trained turists should be allowed on the ISS. First of all the amount of revenue that the Russian space program can bring in by flying tourists will help their cash starved space program and perhaps even the country to some degree. This is far better than having the Russians selling weapons to unfriendly countries to keep their fragile economy running. Secondly NASA should support this by setting training guide lines and making sure that if the candidate 'washes out' of the training he can't go. Let's face it going into space is not like booking a flight to San Francisco.

Blue Tooth is going open up a whole new world for hackers. Think about it. As you are walking down the street a hacker is following behind you hacking into your Palm.

  7. Conservation IS important on Is the Net The Cause of California's Power Problems? · · Score: 1

The recent power crunch in CA is a sign of the times. Look at the waste in this country. Every upscale 'House Frau' drives to Starbucks in a massive Lincoln Navigator just to buy coffee. Its sick. The same attitude carries over to electrical consumption. We leave lights on, A/C is left running at max when not at home, in some upscale communities in Colorado the sidewalks and driveways are heated to remove the snow! That's sick. I work in the tech industry but I'm not going to give a kneen jerk GW Bush type reaction that we need more power plants to keep the economy going. I think that consumers need to conserve and industry needs to conserve. So go ahead and lable me a tree hugging, fresh air lovin, clean water sipping liberal! Just don't call me a tofu lovin, pinko commie...then I'll get mad :-)

  8. Be Careful on The Pentium IV Dissected · · Score: 1

Ok I will agree that there is evidence that the P4 has problems however I'm not convinced that these problems are long term because of the ability of the P4 to reach 2Ghz and beyond. Be careful when a technical article shows way too much emotion. Let's face it this guy is basically saying every other paragraph "Buy AMD, boycott Intel". I read the article but basically dismissed it as the rants of an emotionally overworked person or an AMD propaganda article.

  9. What PalmOS needs to compete on Palm Talks About New OS · · Score: 1

IMHO for PalmOS to compete with WinCE we, the developers, need more dynamic Heap and Threads!!! What is the deal with this 128K Heap? Even the RIM pager has 500K of heap!!!! I have tried to use a WinCE device and it is bad. The GUI is confusing and it is hard to develop any apps under WinCE. Of course in typical uSoft fashion WinCE will improve and eventually rule the PDA world. I hope this doesn't happen. Having the extra color is cool but really what keeps people coming back to the palm is that it is as convenient as looking at your wrist watch. Simple and Easy!

  10. Better Conditions on Cubicle Blues Blamed On IT · · Score: 1

I would say that internal air quality may be the number one reason for office work malaise. It is in the best interest of the company by saving money to not allow too much fresh air into a building because it cost too much to condition it. Think of the all the evil that is in the air you are breathing right now, carpet glue chemicals, copier chemicals, dust, mold, co-worker out-gassing. It is disgusting. Also inactivity will waste the muscles and ruin your digestion. My solution is that I go for a half hour walk after lunch time. It really helps a lot.
