Let's take a hypothetical situation. Two E-commerce websites exactly the same, selling widgits.

Site A runs Linux, SSL, Apache, Whatever...

    Site B Runs Win2k.

Since good old billy charges a tarif to sell the items, Site B's widgets are more expensive than Site A. So slowly Site A makes a better profit.

Then a new nano widget comes out on both sites and Hemos is overjoyed. Both sites get the slashdot effect.
Site A survives the assult with a few minor tweaks, accepting 99.9% of the resultant orders. (.1% lost during the tweaks and the party of massive geeks getting rich)
Site B's servers are still running but saying "out of client licences." The result is 10% of the orders are accepted even at the higher price. Site B goes bankrupt after over ordering the new nano widgets. The excess invintory is bought by site A. Site A changes it's slogan to "Beware of the penguin"

Yet another case of a good use for the slashdot effect and Hemos

  7. Adjust the duration instead of the % moderatable on Moderation Ideas · · Score: 1

Once again CmdrTaco has come up with a bunch of great ideas.

I just have one more to ponder. Instead of making the % that we can moderate based on karma, make the duration of time that we have the points, or the number of points based on karma.

I'm sure we all have seen posts that we want to take a point from, or instantly add one, but if we have moderation access and can't edit that particular post, then the moderator points are useless. This way you still reward the moderators with good karma, while not taking away any of their priveleges.

Here is a side question: If we M2 a comment down or up does it instantly take effect? Are there any rules on who can M2? Or is everyone above moderators?

    Just some food for thought.

  8. Pre Rating of posts on On the Subject of Trolls · · Score: 1

This is for thoes of you that have karma:

What about adding an option to the posting page in which if a users has karma, they can elect to post at a +2 or at a +1. I know that some users just want to blurt some things out sometimes, when other times they have a detailed message that is worth their karma. Obviously this would not go the other way for negative karma users.
Posibly thoes coments that are without karma could not be counted towards future karma(i.e. posting a joke at 1 that gets demoted to 0 would not hurt the user with karma but demoted to -1 would) Or make the karma a pool of allocateable +1's that can be added to that particular users comments as they choose.
    Your thoughts please.

  10. A possible new test on Mindcraft Fun Continues · · Score: 2

Now I am no network expert, but isn't there some way to set a router to share a load acrost two system 50/50? Why not let Microsoft choose a system to be tested as an enterprise server and let the linux experts choose another system(or network of systems). Attach them to to said router and then the router to the internet.

Since these are supposed to be an enterprise systems, let's put them as close to the real thing that we can. The internet would generate the trafic and the internet would not know which system they are hitting. In the end we should see which system handles the load generated by the internet the best.

As for financing, mindcraft should set a budjet, or purchace all the hardware and software so that we are on a level playing field. This would be the constraning factor, (so microsoft could not come back with 50,000 quad PIIIxeon servers). This way there is no hardware de-tunning or anything else that can be claimed to offset the tests.

Basically a straight linux vs. microsoft challange.

As for the required data necessary for the test you can check the logs of the two servers(if they have not been tunned out) or check the log for the router.

If I was an enterprise manager I would not by a NT system an then install linux. I would base my harware on the system that I was going to implement.

That's real life, not a lab.

This would make sure that the post is on topic with the slashdot community, and at the same time, decrease Robs workload. Where is the reward? Moderators get first crack at the stories. They can hit the sites before the slashdot effect. There should be a time limit though as to how long a story can be left in the moderator "area". This way the rest of the slashdot community will still be able to see it. And possibly a place for rejected stories and reasons for rejections.

    One other thing:
Why do moderators need a number? so you can complain? Not.

First step, a policy. 'nuff said.

Second, ipmasq, forwarding, firewaling, proxyies will work, but will also cause major bandwith restriction when your dealing with such a large numbe of users. Then you don't have to worry about the world using thoes exploits.

Third, rember you still have twenty thousand users. I'll bet you that at least one of them want's to dable in hacking. With that large of a system you also have to protect from yourself. Look up kerbose or other WAN login/security systems.

The problem that you face is a matter of convincing the individual system administrators that security is necessary. Publish your own internal security advisory list dictating exploits and e-mail them to the systems that have them. If you show them the importance than they will listen.

    1. Moderation is not the word for what is going on here, but rather a ranking. In no way shape or form can the "moderators" delete a sugestion. They can just mainly rate it, thus changing the number of people that probably read it.

    2. I understand that the system is meant to remove off topic and useless posts but do the "moderators" necessilary need to lower a score? Why can't it just be set that all posts start at 0 or 1 and the "moderators" can raise the score if the post is worth reading. This will prevent the dreaded "Abussive Moderator", tons of e-mail to Rob complainig "Why did I get downgraded?", and users can still screen out the first posts or such by setting there score level to 2. If not then why not just set a publically known lower limit between -10 and 0 to prevent massive complaining.

    3. Many people have requested a moderator ID to be created, but why do we need that? So we can flame individual moderators? I agree with requiring the reason for downgrading, but this should be stated in a threaded post by the moderstor.(possible new rule?)
