    You're right, but I think for the wrong reason. My experience has been that all java programs are faster under Windows, and I've put it down to a better JVM (perhaps better threading?).

    Can't speak for Sparc Solaris though.

    Perl 6 is going to take 4 years to become a reality, and it will be no better than Ruby.

    Parrot will take two years to become stable, and will be no better than a JVM.

    So why not
    a) Hack Ruby syntax to make it perl6? (save two years)
    b) Target JVMs to avoid parrot and get loadsa jarlibs for free?

    No, this is *Slashdot*. We promote things like MySQL here, and ignore PostgresQL, since Slashcode is written using MySQL and not PostgresQL.

    Same goes for promoting anything Ned Flanders (sorry, Larry Wall) says, since slashcode is written in Perl. This is despite the fact that Perl 6 will not be usable for at least 4 years, and will not even have the functionality the Ruby has at the moment.

    Amother example - linux. 1.4.11 released, "download people!". A day later "OK, OK, it's crap, but 1.4.12 isn't - so download people!". And so on, ad nauseum. This is because slashdot runs on linux, not BSD or NT

    What a boring interview. Nothing technical mentioned. And, hey, wow, SCSI layer being rewritten in 2.5.

    But the biggest nonsense in the article was that 2.4 will be ready in a month. Mark my words, 2.4 will not be ready this year, and 2.6, assumming it really is more than just a rewrite of the SCSI layer, wil not be ready before 2006. probably 2007.

    You heard it from me first.

    Get PostgresQL, a real DB. That already has all of these features, and rock solid too, not beta patches etc.

    Sometimes there is no alternative to a real supercomputer. Some problems cannot be solved in paralel. For instance, to do big number factorisation, you still need time on a Cray (or Compaq Alpha supercomputer).

    Building a "beowolf" still won't factor numbers. It might do some of the groundwork, but without that terabyte of memory that can be processed extrenely fast, you'll still be wasting your time.
