Even the so called "open source phone", the Neo FreeRunner, relies on a proprietary baseband OS. The sad reality is that the open source philosophy does not lend well to the hardware world, where the hardware equivalent of "compilation" costs few million dollars each time and can only occur at a few dozen select locations on Earth.

This is true. The software looks for particular info on the MOBO and sees if it is genuine hardware. That's why if you want to install in on "real hardware":) (not this dated shit apple gives you) you need to hack the OSX.

They found out they were paying 3x the price for out dated hardware. Id be pissed to if I just saw the light.
And media basically runs on Apple, thanks to Mac bringing Photoshop, and equivalent tools for video and audio, to market.
