Well, the idea of someone approaching E2 (a website whose content is created by a couple of hundred geeks goofing off work and voluntarily adding material) as a "reference work" at all amuses me. There is a concerted effort to increase accuracy, but with such a broad remit, it's not exactly a bulletproof system. Don't flame us... help us. Or don't. We can at least extend the opportunity for anyone to add their knowledge to the database.

If the internet in its entirity isn't a large/accurate enough source of information for your needs, what hope does our humble website (created in the way described above) possibly have?! Talk about unrealistic expectations! :)

E2 may look like an encyclopedia, (and taste like one) but it isn't one. Hell, I can't summarise it easily and I've been on there since the start. Read the FAQ, if you're bothered.

All you ever wanted to do, consciously or not, was break E2. So don't start with the pious crap again. Check out a new noder like Gritchka. They contributed more of worth in a month than you did in your entire stay, *plus* they didn't piss everyone off with pointless Rush Limbaugh-meets-Joe Pesci temper tantrums.

The funny thing? You *could* have contributed something of use to E2. But you shot yourself in the foot over and over and over again. And you're *still* whining about it. Get a grip.

The point of E2 is that it's collaborative. It's not supposed to be a definitive reference work. If there's an error, you can fix it. Not to mention the that there are generally a few dozen experts (not experts on any subject... just experts in general :) available to /msg.

Still not good enough? You can always try "the internet" I guess.

The story's a rumour, and has been refuted by Capcom already. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that arcades aren't as lucrative as they once were. But Capcom aren't pulling out of the coinop market just yet.

One more thing : Fighting games make money. Now quit your whining.

  12. Another journalistic triumph for /. on Sega Kills Off The Dreamcast · · Score: 1
Let's get some facts straight here. First off, halting Dreamcast production is inevitable at this stage - DC hardware sales have been sluggish (largely due to SoE and SoA's inept marketing) so machines are piling up, and cutting prices to shift stock is costing Sega millions. So therefore the logical thing to do is slam on the brakes.

However, this does not mean that software production is being wound up for the machine - far from it in fact, with PSO and Shenmue 2 just two examples of big titles coming to the machine after it's supposed "death". Sega plan to get 100 more titles out for the machine this year. There are still many, many more DC's out there than PS2's, so the machine's future, while maybe not lengthy, is at least rosy for the time being.

Also, bear in mind that we're talking about the ONLY console with broadband net capabilities that you can use NOW. Certainly seems like a more attractive prospect than the expensive, game-sparse PS2.

Why does Slashdot bother reporting on games? (*shakes head*)

Yes, people play them for 49 minutes a day (I love the way Katz always has to reach for a Believe-it-or-Not! style stat before he makes one of his trite observations).

No, you are never going to really understand why people make or play games Jon. Your articles continue to put me in mind of a middle-aged Dad trying to be cool in front of his children's friends. You're not documenting anything that isn't glaringly obvious to the average person. In fact, you're pidgeonholing gamers (a monolithic entity to you - just as you claim "outcasts/geeks" are to the Oppressive School System) in a rather unhelpful way.

NEWSFLASH : Most gamers are not children. "Gamers are the new story tellers" WTF? It's a romantic statement that simply doesn't reflect the real situation. And I suppose people that don't play games are incapable of strategic thought? Jesus, any more unfounded sweeping generalisations you want to make?

And before I forget, the repeated trumpeting of Sony's PS2 as the Second Coming is simply embarrassing. Woo, a box that can't begin to compete (either on visuals or quality and diversity of games) with the PC, and even seems to struggle head-to-head with the 18-month old Dreamcast.

If anyone can be compared to Atari at this time, it's Sony. Arrogant, out of ideas and pushing a shoddy product. When the developers start to desert them they'll be royally screwed.

(this _will_ happen : who wants to work an extra 6 months on a game to get the damn PS2 to do effects in software that an entry-level PC can do in hardware? It's lunacy.)

  16. Reality Check on What Will Happen to Sega? · · Score: 3
Point one, look at the software charts and the hardware sales in the US. Dreamcast is doing well there. Sega have indicated that they are going to develop games for other platforms. Calling this the "Doom of Sega" is foolish to say the least.

Sega are continuing to support the Dreamcast while there is money to be made (and at the moment, there isn't, but there are still a number of quality titles on the cards and a large user base). They are putting more money into R&D (meaning new coinop stuff as well as porting to other platforms). They are still the third largest console manufacturer, after Sony and Nintendo.

Oh, and for the myopic ppl claiming the PS2 is going to conquer all : one, it's already dated hardware, two, it's overpriced, three, there are _NO_ decent games for it yet, four, the xbox and gamecube are going to eat it for breakfast. Oh yeah, and it doesn't even have a modem !

It's the future of gaming you know. (Snuck)

Katz's stats are old news. If you really want to see the impact of games in raw numbers, check out www.nintendoland.com's "history" feature.

Poole's book is very good (albeit _riddled_ with factual errors). Because it's written by an 'outsider' it often faulters when trying to illustrate its arguments (falling back on a mere handful of recent games), but it does throw up some interesting material. It's not afraid to treat games as an artform - realising that it's not just the audio-visual aspects that qualify this term, but the experience of playing itself.

Of course, it does occasionally over-analyse (Pacman as an allegory for 80's consumerism?) but it's pacy and witty enough to avoid any major mis-steps. Overall, I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who loves games.

Oddly, Katz (above) doesn't say much about the book's strengths - he's too busy trying to labour some vague argument about reality blurring with fantasy (like the tired hack he is :) Talking about Lara Croft in any other context than "Man, Tomb Raider sucks compared to Prince of Persia" is pointless, chinstroking meeja-speak. Nice try, Jon, but the rest of the world has moved on. (And the real gamers never gave a shit about TR in the first place).
