I know it's not exactly what the asker was looking for, but AS and Perl have already been discussed in detail. F-Script offers a different type of scriptability.
There are a handful of OS 9 viruses, but most of them rely on knowing what the hard drive is named. So they'll check for the default "Macintosh HD" and maybe a few common others, but it's extremely common in the mac community to name your hard drive, so the viruses are pretty useless in that respect.
What are you talking about? There is not OS/X. There is no OSX. It's OS X, and "OS X vs OS X" doesn't make any sense.
To answer your question though, the security of OS X is more or less that of the other BSDs at a lower level. The most security problems you're going to raise are because you installed Microsoft Office on OS X. Apple's provided email client is not as virus prone as MS's offering, for example.
I can't believe this. A truly democratic forum? Look at this post- already modded up to 2, and it's just/. ass kissing. All the ones negative to CmdrTaco are 0 or -1. And they are right! What does Taco have to do with MacHack? Jack shit. I'll be there, and I'll be hacking instead of listening to Taco. Please.
after Apple announced that they would be killing Shake for x86 platforms
No, Apple announced that they were discontinuing for Windows. They are continuing to support of x86 operating systems until at least 2003, at which point they would re-evaluate the market. This is not killing it, just leaving their options open.
I think it's important to note that these updates have been relatively small... I don't recall exactly, but all of them have been under 15MB. I think the one for 10.0.3 was only 3 or 4MB. This is a lot different than having 3 hefty updates already.
Of course Apple isn't open source. Have they ever claimed to be? No. They have simply stated that the Darwin core of OS X is open source. Why would they spend years developing OS X and give its source away? Apple is not an open source organization, they are a company that makes a profit.
Before you criticize Apple, educate yourself. There are plenty of things to criticize Apple about, but sorry pal, this isn't one of them.
Another great way to interact with Cocoa apps is F-Script and F-Script Anywhere.

Imagine a BEOWULF CLUSTER of iPaqs running a webserver!!!!!!!
apple.slashdot.org is a day late and a dollar short.
keep up the great work, guys.
Most LCD displays already have a heavy base, unless they're the Apple-style with a picture frame type of kickstand on the back.
I claim this post for uiuc.test!
Imagine a BEOWULF CLUSTER of LEGO MINDSTORMS!!!!!!
You don't have to use NetInfo, just type "chsh" at a command prompt.
virii isn't a word.

Now, that's not to say that there's nothing wrong with Apple hardware, (slow FSB, pc100 RAM, Motorolla making your CPUs)
If you're going to criticize them, at least get your facts straight. It's PC133 RAM, and last I checked it's ``Motorola.''
Wasn't this released back in the Public Beta days?
/.
way to go,
has just reached version 0.2
Great browser, though. Showing lots of potential, although it's going to take quite a bit to unseat OmniWeb for me.
He isn't copying the user interface- he's just showing how to make icons that correspond with the Aqua look and feel, which Apple encourages.
There's a big difference.
You can run scripts, check syntax, even access perldocs from within BBEdit on a highlighted function name.
I can't forsee Project Builder including Perl... PB is for creating applications, not writing scripts.
