  1. Leisure Suit Larry on Gaming Companies Being Sued Over Columbine · · Score: 1

This reminds me of the three questions at the beginning of the Amiga version (and I assume others) of Leisure Suit Larry. In theory, you wouldn't know the answers unles you were over 18 (they were mostly about 70's events, with the game being played in 88 or so). My favorite one was "The song American Pie is about:" with the correct answer being "Four minutes too long".

Of course, I was able to figure out the correct answers at 13. Sorta reminds me of the earlier gun argument. You can always find your way around technical barriers. That's what makes the human mind so powerful/dangerous.

    Good God Man

It's called filmmaking! The long stints of music with the ships moving along were artistic interpretations on the vastness of space.

Somewhat related: 2001 is just about the only space movie that gets much of the science right. Notice that there's never any sound when things are going on in space. The dramatic scene where Dave has to leave his pod and manually re-enter the ship is silent from the moment the pod's door opens until air comes back into the airlock. Little details like that usually get ignored/overlooked.

2010 was a POS Hollywood morality tale about cooperating with others.

2001 is the cornerstone of Sci-Fi moviemaking!

I can see it now. 10 thousand slightly confused 40-something yuppies all the sudden completely unable to get anywhere because they've learned to rely on their fancy On Star GPS in their DeVilles. Break out the map and compass.

  4. Inevitable Outcome on U.S. Supreme Court Issues Election Ruling · · Score: 1

We all knew that Bush was going to end up as president. I just hope Gore makes it as painful for him as possible. Then I hope all the leading democrats take turns beating the crap out of Gore for losing to such a half-wit.

Good thing the LDP picked up more seats in Canada's election. If only they'd get rid of those stupid hate-speech laws. I'm toughing out the US until Roe v Wade gets overturned, and then I'm packing up the car and heading to Vancouver.

Sheesh, whatever happened to the hack for the sake of the hack? You need to read today's article in the New York Times on the MIT Media Lab.

  6. Re:It goes against your instincts... on When The FBI Knocks, A First-Person Account · · Score: 1

But it is extremely hard not to blab to the authorities, especially when you have nothing to hide. This can get you into hot water. Lawyers, DAs, etc are very good at distorting whatever you say.

The police are never going to say "OK thanks, you've told us enough" and leave. The more "evedence" they take, the easier their job.

Still, an extremely scary story. Perfect for Halloween.
