1) Your post was 90% around the US mainland but whatever, never mind.
2) China might pay the same for raw materials but as their labor costs almost nothing compared to US labor the end result is that things made with those raw materials cost much less. Of course there is a relative difference and it is hugely significant.
If it costs the US 10,000 USD to make a rifle and it costs China 34 USD to make the same product I would say that is something that has to be taken into account when calculating who is building up their military and by how much.
Nice that you paid for your kids. Would that every parent could do so, would that every child could count on it.
Your vision is very narrow and takes into account only people in similar circumstances as yourself.
I haven't lived with my parents since I was eight years old as they weren't able, in many ways including financially, to take care of me. I certainly could not count on them to pay my Uni tuition for me.
I, like others who don't have parents who can pay for them, took on a heavy load of student debt in order to get an education and increase my prospects for putting myself in a position where I could pay for my children's education at some point in the future because you know what? If I wanted an education I had no other choice.
Your lack of 'sympathy' for people who don't have parents to pay for their education is unfortunate. If enough people think like you then anyone who isn't so fortunate as your children will continue to be completely fucked.
Your similar lack of sympathy for poor people who got sold a bill of goods by financial institutions to follow 'the American dream' and lost what little they had, not to mention all the folks who HAD good jobs and lost them due to the failing economy and could thus no longer afford to make their normally reasonable mortgage payments, losing their homes and looking to their government to support them is similarly unfortunate. I can only hope that you have the chance to experience similar misfortune at some point in your life so that you can gain some perspective.
Do you have sources for your statement that "Students who don't pay back their loans are costing everyone who does make their payments extra in the form of higher interest rates." ?
I'm all for working with the system but I'm also for tuning the system so that it works well.
"...the University can reduce its costs by outsourcing email. That in turn increases the amount that the people working for the university can pay themselves."
FTFY
Unless you can show that this actually results in lower student fees, which I doubt.
You've addressed only one of my two points and no, that wasn't what I was saying anyway. I'm saying:
1) That we can't focus only on US mainland invasion as this is not the only or even most likely location of coming conflict(s).
2) When making a comparison between how much countries spend on something, in this case 'defense', one must take into account the relative value of the money concerned. In this case you were saying that the US outspends China 10:1 and I'm saying that I believe that if you take the relative value of money into account the reverse is probably true.
I made no judgement on how the money is being spent, only that 1 USD spent in China is worth a lot more than 1 USD spent in the US. You are (probably) right that the US outspends China in absolute dollar terms but perhaps not in real return on investment terms.
Do you really think that the US mainland is the only consideration?
The US goes to war whenever there is any economic (ie oil) consideration. China and the US are already competing for resources globally, and it's only going to get worse.
By the way...when people say that the US outspends China 10:1...that doesn't take into account that 1 USD has the buying power of 1 USD in the US but has the buying power of 300 USD in China, with regard to what you get for your money. If you don't take this into consideration then any comparative figures on what countries spend on 'defense' are completely worthless.
Many people who see that their cars support such functions directly do this will think it must be all right do this whereas the same people might not do it if their car didn't support it directly and they had to pull out their handset.
I find it very difficult to believe that a die shrink would improve battery life by that much. Given the amount of energy used by the screen and the radios, you could probably remove the CPU entirely and not see a 30% power reduction.
Either they fixed some other issues, or else the power savings are being exaggerated. Did the old processor have an extremely high sleep current, perhaps?
I'm fairly sure that if you remove the CPU entirely you'll see close to 100% power reduction...
Don't worry - it wouldn't be the first time a politician said something that they have absolutely no intention of going through with in order to garner political support.
I think you're assuming there are no back doors in Fedora or the encryption software included therewith. Does Fedora have some form of security that I'm not aware of to prevent such, other than being open?
This is no different than an email trojan vector. They've passed the file using skype but this is not any weakness in skype itself unless one thinks that skype should be scanning files that are transferred across it as part of the service.
"...the US does have a policy of banning certain activities for the detrimental effects on willing participants."
Like boxing?
All that will change is that the players will be obliged to, if they want to play, sign some forms that release the organizations making money from liability.
You are assuming that there is some actual rational behind the price hike other than greed.
I don't think that Microsoft is 'importing' volume licensing from anywhere. They're raising prices because they can, nothing more. The rest is bullshit.
Just looking to see if other people notice that these things burn out just as fast as normal bulbs or not.
For a lot of people it actually might be worth tracking the dates of purchase as these things cost much more than 'standard' bulbs do / did.
Phillips has these great 5 and 10 year warranties on their bulbs but they seem to me to last about the same as normal bulbs.
Anyone else have similar experience or do I have a problem with my wiring...?

Maybe but from what I've seen 'non-profit' doesn't mean anything other than not having to pay taxes.
The entities and the people working for them can still benefit even if the organization is termed non-profit.
Yale and Harvard, to take two, are both 'non-profit' and yet they are arguably extremely rich.
How do you connect government paying for education with skyrocketing tuition exactly?
Pre-university education is free in the US and there are no similar issues.
University level education is free in many developed countries and there are no similar issues.
Government funds education for a reason...to have an educated populace. This is an investment in the country, in the people and in the society.
If you have education only for the rich who can pay for education themselves, then only the rich will be educated.

Was a joke and thus deliberately completely silly. Apologies for destroying your brain cells...no doubt you have plenty left.

Anyone else thinking of remote control on demand customizable girlfriends?

It is if you use the definition 2 of the word steal which includes appropriating ideas or words without right which is why I pasted it...
The post wasn't written in the XiXth century and current law, while based on precedent, still uses current definitions.

Yes we should make it illegal like other brain trauma inducing 'sports' such as boxing...oh wait...
Perhaps only people with brain damage want to play(/watch) cricket?

Maybe I'm being stupid but maybe you could elucidate the perceived linkage between the two as I don't see it...?
