  1. What would Dilbert say? on How Will Electronic Patents Affect the USPTO? · · Score: 1

Or more accurately, the PHB... "Work smarter, not harder"

So what does this mean for all of us free thinkers? It means expect to be taken to court for more and more frivolous lawsuits which have no basis in reality, but which were rushed through the electronic system.

Didn't we learn something from the Amish (besides how to churn butter :D) - That theres a certain quality which comes from things done by hand. In this new "Information Revolution," we keep trying to automate and e-nable all our nouns (e-business, e-mail, e-patent), but we're really sacrificing the quality that goes into them.

Instead of churning out more patents daily, the Patent Office should be working to churn out quality patents. Period. None of this gene patenting crap, or patenting on one-click shopping. I mean, come on, you can't patent common sense (Well, unless you go to the PTO, in which case for a proper fee you can)

Oh well. I wonder when someone will patent a Republic and then sue the US.

  3. Will it still be the Killer App though? on Napster Going to Subscriptions · · Score: 2

All these media pundits using phrases like "killer app" and the "next best thing to hit the net," I have to wonder that if Napster switches to a subscription service, how many people will use it?

For me, the allure of Napster was free and anonymous access (although agreeably, anonymous is highly relative), but with them charging a subscription fee, no matter what the cost, you are going to have to relinquish personally identifiable information. You may say that this is all good and fine, because now the record companies work "together" with Napster, but I think it'll be a cold day in Hell before you see every record label willing to work with Napster.

Until that day comes, then any information you submit could just as well be subpoened by some lawsuit-happy label, whether it be one of the "Big 5" or some small indie label that you downloaded one song from.

On the flip side, I suppose it's good to see these labels realizing that they cannot stop what Napster has started.

  4. Re:Python 3.0 release imminent? on PythonLabs moves to Digital Creations · · Score: 1

Dear Lord, does that mean we'll soon have Python.NET? Or will it be 'ahead a version number' and be like.. Python.WEB or Python.Fire. I wonder if the samples will now say "Hello, Dave, would you like to play some chess" instead of "Hello World" (rumor has it that Ada samples said "Good Morning Vietnam", but that's still up in debate)

  5. The joy of hysteria on Sony Playstation 2 for Over $1k [Updated -- $5K] · · Score: 1

I think this well establishes that the masses are a$$es....

On a funny tangent, I saw two best friends have their nice lil splitting of ways. And why would these two friends of many years part? Very simply. Person A was called by Person B just as he was about to go inline, a call which lasted for a total of near 30 seconds. Person A then left to stand in line, and when it became his turn to get one, they had just sold the last one. Yup, the person in front of him got the last one of the store. Person A called up Person B, had a lovely lil tirade, and now these two former-friends are out and about spreading rumors.

And they say video games don't dehumanize us.

  7. Why is this suprising? on @Home Critic Silenced By @Home · · Score: 1

Doesn't anyone remember the case w/ the Apple leak? Why should any of us be suprised at @Home is doing the same tactics at Apple established are perfectly 'acceptable' in today's world.
My question is, is if he's such a 'critic', how the heck did he *get* those internal documents? Surely theres a leak somewhere (or the @Home Techies were running a lil File & Print Sharing :b)

  8. Why hasn't Mir gone to the pr0n industry? on Mir Lives · · Score: 2

  9. Re:At least we don't have to worry about splashdow on Mir Lives · · Score: 1

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't your math imply that it is *uncontorolled* - in an uncontrolled entry, where all other factors were equal, then yes, it's a 3/10 chance (Earth = 30% land), but sadly for the Australians (*cough*Skylab*cough*), it isn't uncontrolled. So that makes the odds *much* less

  10. Something doesn't add up here.... on Mir Lives · · Score: 3

"US Pledges more money to Russia for ISS" "World Bank releives Russia of debt to help fund ISS" "Russian citizens mugged to give more money to ISS" Now all of a sudden we have, "Russia pledges 750 million ruples to space station because 'It's been such a good space station this week, so it gets an advance on its allowance'" Is it just me or does it seem like Russia is becoming that Hamburger dude from Popeye? "I'll gladly pay you back (whenever) if you loan me money today"

  11. From the people who brought you..... on End To Blindness? · · Score: 1

  12. But when will they....... on Palm Used in Contemporary Art · · Score: 1

Build structural art with the Palms? In so much as that's about the only good use for them, I can imagine the 'fun' "art" that will be created... Of course, I'm sure Gulliani wouldn't allow it to be displayed, since the Palms so closely resemble crap, but can you imagine the leaning tower of Palm-za?
