  5. Lake Vostok on Drilling For Oil With Megawatt Lasers · · Score: 2

Wouldn't this be the ideal drill to use for getting into Lake Vostok? Scientists have been looking for a way to get into the underground lake without polluting it for a few years now. Surely a laser wouldn't pollute the lake at all.

They could drill to within a few centimeters of the lake and then send down a probe. The probe could disinfect itself at the bottom of the hole before bashing through the rest of the rock to get into the lake, take samples and do tests.

  6. I'm sure I saw something similar.... on New Holographic Storage Medium Doesn't Shrink · · Score: 2

..a while ago, about cubes filled with proteins. Data would be stored on the proteins. Scientists had managed to store the data with relative ease, but couldn't retreive the data later on. This was 10GB per cubic cm. Holographic storage could mean that long awaited huge drop in hard drive prices and maybe even memory, depending on the read/write speed of it all. Imagine a rackmount file server storing terrabytes of data. mmmmmm... *drool* The perfect MP3 jukebox.
