  1. Yet another UPS horror story... on How Not To Ship Computers · · Score: 1

I actually wrote a Hissyfit about my UPS nightmare. All I wanted to do was sell my ancient LC580. The Mailboxes Etc. guy said his packing methods were approved by UPS, and it cost a bundle so I thought I was okay. I dropped the packages off at the UPS counter and the fun began.

TWO MONTHS later, I got a refund on my shipping charges and was reimbursed for my loss--about $200 in all. The only reason I got any money back at all was because UPS said their counter rep should have rejected my package due to insufficent packaging but didn't. I was able to reimburse my buyer who actually left me positive feedback after all we'd been through for this stupid computer.

There's a pretty good picture of the damage in that Hissyfit article. Needless to say I a) will never ship anything that big and heavy again if I can help it and b) I will sure as hell not be shipping it via UPS. Sonsabitches.

  2. Cutting off your nose... on Dump Broadband, Dig Out Your Modem! · · Score: 1

...to spite your face, much? How is dial-up more reliable than just about *any* broadband service? There are too many variables for me to believe that. Some brands of modems don't like to talk to each other, your phone lines might suck, etc.

I also agree with the other poster who said two disillusioned luddites does not a trend make. This person reminds me of the overbearing Mommy who called my university's help desk and said if her baby didn't have internet by THAT NIGHT they were pulling him from the university! Boo effin hoo...did her cable modem drop her while she was downloading some pr0n, so she said "fuck you then, I'm going back to 56k and you CAN'T STOP ME!"

    What a bunch of weeners.

  3. Hot button topic... on Online Retailer Fraud? · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's one with me, anyway. All of my computer geek friends insist on buying their parts from companies listed on PriceWatch because they swear up and down they can get the absolute best prices there. Never mind that sometimes they end up buying parts from joebobschickenshackandcomputerparts.com, and Joe Bob charges three times normal shipping costs to make his money back since he's selling computer parts at ridiculously low prices. Plus, Joe Bob almost ALWAYS has a bizarro, convoluted, screw-the-customer-at-every-turn return policy. I'm all about being frugal, but as a previous poster said a few extra dollars is worth my peace of mind. Are you really saving that much money when you risk getting crap merchandise that can't be returned?

I'm trying to get my boyfriend to stop shopping at these places, but he's gotten lucky and not been screwed the few times he's shopped there, so he continues to do it. I'll stick with the bigger name places for my parts, thankyouverymuch.

No kidding. When the K-Mart first went in here (1979-ish, I belive), they took your picture when you wrote a check. Pissed my dad off so much I don't know if he's ever been back.
