Exactly - I've been out of work enough times in recent years to not want to tempt fate. IT Professionals get an amazing amount of leeway and freedom in the workplace...the job sucks more when more red-tape gets added because "someone" was snooping...

Yes, if it was the only game in town absolutely. I may work there only temporarily or with an expectation of attempting to find something else, but when the creditors are hounding you every day asking you "when are you going to have another job?" or telling you "we'll be repossessing your car next week" you have a lot shakier ground to stand on. As someone that was unemployed for the better part of this year I can say - tight finances make it tough to negotiate. When you're not holding any cards, you'll have a hard time bluffing.

One person standing up for their rights gets shot. Check out Ruby Ridge or any of the other "nutcases" over the last 30 years that the FBI and ATF have responded (with force) to. It takes a movement to make it happen...unfortunately the OWS and TP folks aren't interested in rocking the boat enough to have that happen...after all, if the infrastructure crashes it'll be more difficult to access their beloved time-wasters (like /. ) Unfortunately, the only movements I seem to be capable of mustering the energy for involve a toilet bowl and some undercooked chicken...

  11. Multiple Monitor Support, Multiple Audio Support.. on What's Keeping You On Windows? · · Score: 1

I'm actually getting ready to re-migrate all of my shit back to Windows 7 because I'm absolutely sick to death of having to "tweak" everything just to get it to work. I respect and understand that most Linux distros work well for one or two monitors, but with 6 it's just too much of a pain in the ass to have to fuck with X11 every time there's an update (or sometimes not). I've also recently started having problems with my audio being unable to export to two different speakers (one set of normal speakers, the other a USB headset) among other issues. The nuts and bolts? I'm forced to use Windows 7 at work (and am an IT guy so I support it at work too) and I have to admit that M$ really came through. Of course, I'm still not willing to spend the money on buying it...fortunately my boss purchased me a copy so I'm not out the cash. Beyond that? The usual reasons...support for specific games/programs comes to mind. While I appreciate all of the hard work that has gone into the Linux Desktop (and while I'm sick of the phrase), Linux still isn't ready for prime-time when it comes to the Desktop. The bar keeps raising and Linux is trailing more and more as time passes. There's little to no video card support if you want to do anything even remotely nonstandard with your setup and let's be honest - when you have "weird" hardware, the last thing you want to do is spend a week configuring your desktop just so you can check your email or whatever. I'd like my time at home to be MINE, not Linux's. For the record I've used multiple distros over the last few years - Redhat, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Dreamlinux, Fedora, Cent...I think that's it for the big ones. None of them work out of the box and ALL of them require way more time/maintenance than should be required for a "simple" desktop. I love the open source model and wish that it would produce as good of software as the big players, but after 30 years it just doesn't look like it's going to happen. Of course, I'll keep my Linux install on a separate drive, but I expect that I will boot into it rarely if at all...I just won't have a reason to if I'm using Windows. Now, the downside of course is security. The virus laden pitfalls that await on the web do make me a bit nervous - I go to places I probably ought-not go - but once again, the tools exist to make that a bit safer (noscript, Tor, etc). I guess I'll just have to see how it turns out :)
