Are we sure that we're just talking about the web here? The JRE gives the ability to run both applets in browser and normal Java apps... and it's not like there's a shortage of those

  9. Java -- more real than you think on Qt for Mac · · Score: 3

Many people (many slashdotters included) seem to discount the possbility of using Java for real cross-platform desktop apps... I wouldn't be so quick to do so, however. Look at apps like LimeWire, Sun's Forte Java IDE, and the number of sourceforge projects done in Java (though admittedly many of these aren't desktop apps). Hardware is cheap right now, eliminating Java's biggest drawback as a language (speed). Many people are now learning programming with Java (like I did), and it has many appeals as a language, cross-platform ability being only one of them. Java's a desktop contender, and will only grow as such.

Now if only Sun would actually open Java's source...

do we really want one piece of hardware that could do all this? you're basically talking about something with the complexity of a PC that you're dependant on for a large number of resources in your household... what if its power supply blows? or some other essential component. you've lost all those services in one punch.

it seems to me that a better solution would be a Jini-type structure.... each device provides a service, and knows how to use the services provided by other devices... granted, you'd still be pretty fuX0red if your storage device goes out, but you'd still be able to enjoy your CDs/DVDs from disc...

  13. Java == client side? on Curl Instead of Java or JavaScript? · · Score: 2

As a Java developer, I don't much like the name of JavaScript, since it really isn't Java. java is no more a client side programming language than VB is. Both can be used for client-side in-browser apps (applets, activex), but as far as the web goes are more popular for the server-side (ASP, JSP).

I think the best way to tell the difference is the salary difference between JavaScript and Java programmers. :-)

  14. recharging a watch??? on IBM Linux Watch v2.0 · · Score: 1

IBM foresees a day when such a watch would have a week's worth of battery power. Like a handheld computer, it could be recharged in a cradle during the night, where it would receive fresh updates such as traffic reports for its owner.

I don't know about everyone else, but I have a hard enough time keeping my cell charged and fresh batteries in my Visor--I can't imagine having to charge my watch once a week... nor can I afford to be late to class more often than I already am just because my watch has its own microprocessor....

  16. Re:JSP + Servlet + EJB = Heaven on The Fastest Web Language On The 'Net? · · Score: 1

By adding "EJB" to the mix, you're limiting them to paid software (unless someone can tell me about an Open Source EJB container?). As far as Servlet environments go, if you're looking for speed, make sure you use Apache/JServ, not Jakarta Tomcat. Tomcat supports newer specs, but JServ is a tried and true fast servlet environment. Despite Java's general sluggishness, on good hardware it will get the job done.
