I agree with you. I also wonder about almost every other company that wants to associate itself with Linux and the Open Source software in general. For the most part, a companies motivation lies in it making a profit. Some companies (i.e. VA Linux, O'Reilly, etc.) arguably do a better job of actually benefitting the community, while at the same time thriving business-wise. I hope that Corel has the same good intentions in mind. I do see their involvement as a very positive thing because they have some excellent applications they can bring to the Linux community. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

One would think that working for the Royal Family in almost any capacity would be a high profile position. Is it possible that you could have any influence on the broader acceptance and use of Linux and other Open Source/Free Software in the U.K. and Europe in general?

No, I don't hate you. Thanks for the reply and answering my question. It's not your fault that a company "ties" itself to another in this particular way.

I think your totally wrong.;-) Using the same logic, you could say all hardware is "Winthis" or "Winthat." Just because it comes with a Wndows driver and not a Linux one does not mean it is a "Winanything".

What about HP's drivers for their newer printers? I have a 712C and would love to have it work under Linux. Don't tell me to write it myself, because I'm not quite there yet (working on it). It seems with the interest HP has taken in the "Open Source" movement, they would be interested in this. They would also sell more printers:-) I do know that Linux Mandrake has Alpha/Beta drivers for it.

This may get marked down as "flamebait," but I think it's a valid opinion/argument. Here goes: I totally agree. Some people may want to be compensated for their time and effort. It's fantastic if they release their source under a GPL-type license but still sell the product for money. It's even better if they want to give away there product free of charge in addition to releasing the source. I have much respect for Richard Stallman and all of the FSF crew. Stallman's oft-quoted statement "free as in speach, not beer" is apt here. Stallman has said himself (correct me if I'm wrong) that he is not opposed to someone creating something and selling it. If anything is going to ruin the Free Software/Open Source/whateveryouwannacallit movement, it is going to be this type of bigotry. "Linux people" are already seen as being a bunch of fanatics. Why must we continue to perpetuate this seething hatred of anything not FREE? or anything Microsoft for that matter? If we expect to bring more people over to our way of thinking, I really don't think this is the way.

Especially with the Register reporting this taking into account their history of "creating" news. Although, it wouldn't be a bit surprising with all of the overclocking of Intel chips as it is. We all know that the cores of Intel chips can perform admirably well above there "advertised" clock speed. They probably have had 1100 MGHz capable cores sitting in the vault for sometime now.

Has anyone seen the new Red Hat install for v. 6.1? It is very cool! I think it is super easy and it looks very slick. Most Linux distros are getting away from the "Linux is way too hard to install" mentality that has been a pervasive issue with the media and some competitors. It is fast becoming a problem of the past.

Sure they have given much back to the community-at-large, but I was referring to the FSF in particular whom we have all benefitted from because of all the great GNU tools and such we have available. I know also, that the FSF is not there to make a profit necessarily, but they need income (which is different from profit) they must support the organization and I do believe they do have some people who work for pay (in addition to the many volunteers.) Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks for the response anyway.
