  6. Other reasons they probably worry... on Copy Protection - Scapegoat or Real Threat? · · Score: 2

Another reason they may worry is because MP3's are not recorded to a piece of media and that media distributed, they are of course downloadable where you can burn them to a CD or simply store them on your hard drive. With cassettes and CD's, you still have to purchase the media to put the copies on. Although this was relatively cheap, it was still an obstacle. Additionally, MP3's can be spread infinitely faster with software such as Napster. I was thinking awhile back, if everyone on the Internet would buy one CD and a different CD from everyone else and then share that CD on the Internet with something like Napster, everyones CD/MP3 collection would grow exponentially for about the low, low price of $15. Basically, no more need for the music companies. This has got to scare the fsck out of them. I was watching a show awhile back that prompted me to think that this is not such a bad idea in some ways. Chuck D from Public Enemy was on the show and said (paraphrasing) that it is the goal of the record companies to keep both sides as ignorant of the whole process as possible. Keep the customers and the artists in the dark as to the inner workings of the business so they can continue to make beaucoup $$. He seemed to think that this will all change with the advent of MP3's. The distribution channels will open up. Artists who currently have no way to be heard under the current system will now have their music broadcast literally around the world for all to hear. The music industry will definitely change due to the new technology. Whether the record companies will survive depends on their ability to adapt in a positive manner. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I don't think this is significant in the way most people think. Certainly, this is a huge deal. No doubt about it, one of the biggest ever, BUT I think this is only the first of it's kind. This is just part of the growth of the Internet (which don't forget, AOL is not, as much as they would like their customers to believe otherwise.) The true Internet is currently so much larger than AOL and will only continue to grow. This was bound to happen at one time or another. The merging of old media with the new. I would look for there to be other mega-mergers of this sort down the road. You can look at it also as a sort of "validation" (if you will) of the Internet as having finally arrived. Until now and perhaps for awhile yet, the Internet has been an experiment, compared to the potential it has yet to realize. The Internet is still having growing pains. Witness the multitude of problems with online shopping during the past holiday season. The Internet is still so very young and relatively wide open where business is concerned. I dare say it has a long, long way to go. Sure, in the future, we'll look back at this merger as being a major turning point (similar to what the open sourcing of Netscape's browser did for Open Source software) in the growth and acceptance of the Internet, but I think it will be seen as just that and not the beginning of the end. (The end being an AOL dominated Internet. Nope, not gonna happen.)

I have submitted quite a few stories myself that I was interested in and I'm sure other geeks/nerds would have found them interesting as well, yet they were never posted. Obviously, you cannot post every story submitted, but if I've submitted stories that I found interesting and they were never posted, I have wonder how many other geeks posted stories that I would have been interested in and never had the opportunity to read?

My question: Is there some way we, the readers, could view a larger portion of the submitted stories whether they get posted to the main page or not?

Kind of an overflow buffer, if you will. Obviously, duplicates and nonsense stories referencing "grits" would have to be done away with, but I feel that Slashdot could provide much more information than it currently does. From the reader perspective, more quality content is definitely better and from a business standpoint, more stories equals more valid page hits for Slashdot. We would all benefit.

The stuff you really have to pay people to write? Maybe third party vendors with paid employees are the answer, but will all of those companies want to make their software truly Open Source?

It may have already happened and who would know? I would think this would be one of the problems with open source vs. closed source. With a piece of software being closed source and provided to the public only in binary form, who's to say some open source code hasn't already been "borrowed" without credit being given to the original author or any changes that were made, being made open. As well, this case or a similar one is bound to end up in court and what will happen then? I, for one, hope we will have some good lawyers who can argue effectively for the open source position. Lawyers that understand what it is really all about and can convey that message to a judge effectively so he can make an truly informed decision.

  24. Re:Open Source Music on Are MP3 Web Sites Unfair to Indie Artists? · · Score: 2

Just how can music be Open Sourced? I understand that the lyrics and notes could be copied, changed, redistributed, etc. but that doesn't make much sense to me. Music is more than the lyrics and notes. It's about the performance by the artist. The sum of it's parts, if you will. For instance, I could take a Beatles song, not change the lyrics, play just the music tracks (without the voices) and record my own vocals over it. It still wouldn't be the Beatles and I'm almost certain no one would pay any money for it.

To get from under record companies, whether they be major or indie labels, I think the artists should promote themselves over the Internet. I saw an interview with Chuck D of Public Enemy and he's all for the free distribution of MP3's. He thinks it will give many artists from all over the world the chance to have their music heard whereas with the old regime, that would have been virtually impossible. I tend to agree with him. As far as how the artists would make money, I think a small fee for the download of the song (say $1 per) is reasonable. Kind of like shareware, where software is concerned. If you like it, be respectful and send the artist their due. If an artist truly loves their art, they'll continue to do it whether they get paid or not. However, if they expect to make a living from it, they better produce a decent product that people like or they'll end up like the cliched "starving artist". Another way to make money and propagate the success of their music could be tours. I would think that a major source of revenue for today's artists is touring. If they have fans and those fans would like to see the artist live, they will pay for that experience. Again, the cream will rise to the top (just like Open Source software) and the people making good music, could conceivably make a living.

Or am I just plain crazy?
