    I think it's pretty safe to say that we can dismiss claims that perl is dying as pure rubbish. Sure, the language isn't as trendy as ruby or whatever the new hotness is but it's still a language that is used by thousands of companies and applications every day and will continue to be used for quite some time.

    Until the Corps of Engineers shuts off the water at least. Not that we would do that since there's a lot of valuable crops grown in CA but don't sit and say that you can live without the rest of the country.

    Oh yes, a whopping 0.05% that I get from my credit union. That's not even enough to keep up with inflation. Keeping your money in the bank means that you are losing purchasing power every year.

    Paper maps are far superior to GPS or smart phones. When you're out in the middle of the mountains with no signal or a dead battery you'll be damn glad you have some old fashioned paper maps.

    Lots of things are confusing for new users but that doesn't mean you should break 40+ years of ingrained behavior and functionality for them. Frankly, if people can't bother learning that middle click == paste they probably shouldn't be running Linux in the first place.

    A few perl scripts and your conversion is done. Yeah it's a pain to switch but it's not something you have to do every day.

    RAID 1 with a nightly rsync to an off-site server has worked for me for several years now. The remote server runs zfs so I also take weekly snapshots in case I need to restore something older than last night.

    Motorcyclists go through the same crap but it's simply a matter of physics. A 3 ton car vs. a 50 lb. bike will always result in the bike losing. Ride like everybody is out to kill you because a lot of them are too busy texting, changing the radio station, etc. and aren't paying attention to the road.
