This Economic Times article, (which was rejected by the editor's) very beautifully articulates that Intellectual Property is not a right but a privilege.
Qoute:
"Few people outside Cuba and North Korea would be opposed to the concept of patents, trademarks and copyrights. However, given that the cost of these to the public, worldwide, is in tens of billions of dollars, it is desirable that the debate on the subject be carried out in rational terms.
It is therefore advisable that a non-emotive term be used to describe these concepts.
IPRs have a closer relationship with innovation, novelty and distinctiveness. Normally, every IPR would involve innovation or novelty, though not everything which is innovative may be entitled to an IPR.
As discussed above, IPRs are, at best, negative rights. An IPR-holder has an exclusive right to do something to the exclusion of all others.
In essence, therefore, an IPR is not a right, but a privilege. When the holders of such exclusive rights sue to maintain the exclusion against third parties, they can hardly be said to be defending their rights, they are actually enforcing their privileges.
In terms of their legal incidents, IPRs are no different from such privileges, albeit with a far better policy justification to support them."
So, to summarise, by using term's such as right, Corp's & lawyer's are essentially exaggerating their claim.
Someone (Dave Barry) in the popular press has finally, explicitly and with a sense of humour, pointed out that Microsoft Windows doesn't get any more reliable or usable, no matter how many versions you buy."
It's good to see dear old dave writing about geeky things about bashing micro$. Hey Dave, why don't you write on how you feel about copyright issues. Especially becos' I religiously collected your articles (starting fr. '98) convert it to text, tar it & distribute it. Of course I retain your name. Since you are a micro$8$! bashing geek, i hope your response will be favourable to all geeks.
China is really waking up to the language barrier. China has woken up to the competition it faces India. It has already introduced English in Primary education. Here, India is getting very hostile to China's competition to India's crown jewel. In fact, the hostility is so high, that the entire media here had made an issue of allegation about the chinese company, Huawei Techlinks with the taliban. The Indiansoftwareindustry dissmisses it threat.
My predictions:
Oppressive regimes like china, S.Arabia, etc will be more successfull in restricting content, mainly because they give a damn about civil liberties & can go to any extent to block what they want to block.
Where as in the case of democracies, either they may give up trying to restrict certaing things like porn, hate speech, etc., which have the suffport of people ( alteast the majority) or are less harmful.& may instead go after things like child porn, etc.
A case in point:- India, which has quite a few
restrictions on porn, is unable to implement it. Infact, the police here (I live here) say that it's impossible to admit & instead say people should morally control (sic) themselves.
Here is a set of articles(http://www.swaminomics.org/articlesdate.h tml) written by One Swaminathan S. Anklesaria Aiyar, editor of economictimes. He is pro-globalisation, but his writings are very very objective & sensible & just go through all his writings to get a sense of what he is trying to say. Also check out the editorials at economic times, which he writes daily & the above google link(http://www.google.com/search?q=SWAMINATHAN+S. +ANKLESARIA+AIYAR+&btnG=Google+Search&hl=en) for some interesting articles I found.
htdp.org (how to do programming) is an excellent guide put by MIT. It is aimed at high school students, but is a very good guide for non-programmers. It uses Dr.scheme, a special version of scheme prepared bye MIT & is also available for all platforms. And also, it's aim ( as speciefied on the site) is to teach fundamentals, you can use anywhere & it does acheive it. And it's free too.
Yeah, and the village idiot will ascend to the throne (a widely-distributed fake Nostradamus prophecy). Assuming, nostradamus meant the US
Village - Texas
Idiot - GW Bush
So, do some research before you post.;-)
US news sites may be clogged, so here are some non-us sites.
Reddif USA times of India - Lots of photos.
Dawn - check out the editorial on Afghanistan. BTW, this is a pakistani newspaper, but very credible.
This is the text version of their site.

Heh..This plan works for me.;-)
The real reason, the simputer has been created is, the existing content on the web is not useful for an illiterate person. By producing low cost computers in local language,(in 2 languages at present) it gives an opportunity for content providers to target these groups with specialised content.

Is the Apple's superbowl ad available(screenshots or film) on the net anywhere, atleast for historical reasons.
It show's slashdot's editors are moving towards politically correct journalism.
