    Um, Why hasn't a concerted effort been made to build a berm uphill from the power plant to divert the lava?

    Well, I'm guessing it's an environmental concern.... :)

    Actually, I don't think a berm would be fully effective. Lava does flow down hill, but it is pretty viscous and solidifies as it cools so it tends to fill up channels it's flowing in over time. So if the berm was slowing down the flow enough, it could pretty quickly get topped, making the effort useless..

    Clearly you haven't been paying attention.

    To the left's crazy mumblings and their calling their opponents Nazis? Nope, not listening to that tripe. I don't listen to crazy folks who have nothing left but to draw inappropriate historical parallels. If you are reduced to making villains out of your opponents like this, you are in trouble as a party because such foolishness only works in the short term. Long term the voters tire of the hyperventilated messaging and stop listening.

    And yes, it works both ways. Trump and his tweeting is a problem too, for the very same reason... Hyperbolae can only carry you so far in any direction before you run out of steam,

    WHY are we discussing this obviously politically motivated article? I recall Obama having similar issues with HIS cell phones, which he too refused to give up, but Politico didn't cover that now did they? Of course not. So why are we discussing this on Slashdot now?

  7. I'm an Englishman living in the US. In my first year of living in the US I had multiple people tell me they were impressed with how well I spoke the language for a recent immigrant. One went even further and told me "wow, it's like you're almost fluent".

    Are you sure they didn't call you a potty mouth? AS in you speak affluent ?

    If it's making sensational claims about a controversial subject, red flags should go up. IF it's trying to make dire predictions of bad consequences on a complex issue, or relies on making over simplifications of broadly complex scientific fields of study, more red flags go up. IF they are making nonsensical associations between unrelated scientific disciplines or comparing apples with oranges without blinking an eye, forget it. IF they don't discuss the possibly ways they could be wrong or what the limits of their observations and data are, just don't bother.

    It's pretty much a safe bet that if you are reading something "scientific" on a news site, it's only there as click bait. Nearly all that stuff is garbage.

    HOWEVER, if you are reading a peer reviewed study or an article from a well known, well respected publication, you might want to read carefully, review the foot notes fully, then decide what you think..

    Take EVERYTHING with a grain of salt...

    True.. But I think some organizations use this effect to advance their causes. Commissioning "studies" which are thinly veiled ways to take some real science, slap on a veneer of alarmist inventions and include a couple of alarming looking extrapolated graphs by carefully massaging the data, sign the "study" with lots of letters after the author's name. Then Circulate amongst the media and volia... A Slashdot story is born.

    LOL.. SO you are upset with workers who refuse to join the union and pay dues to get a job? This isn't the company's beating the Union, this is the Union not being relevant and efficient enough to be worth the dues they collect so workers abandoned them.

    And it's "right to work" states you are upset with... You know the ones with the low unemployment numbers to go along with those low percentages of union jobs? Employers LOVE "right to work" states... You *SHOULD* be griping about the NLRB letting the likes of Boeing and auto makers farm out work to non-union shops in right to work states, but no... You are shooting at the wrong problem.

    Lies, damnable lies, and Statistics...

    Most of this stuff global destruction environmental science PR is pretty contrived anyway. They have a tendency to over do the emotionally fabrication and wording when trying to make their point. It generally ends up with "we are all going to die!" or there abouts...

    Problem though is when you do this, eventually you run out of space for the hype or dire consequences and your support wanes. It's sort of like taking drugs, where once a little was enough to get high, it starts taking more and more. Eventually you cannot take more because it will kill you or there simply isn't any more to take. Same with environmental emergency madness. Once you get to "we are all going to die!" there simply isn't much more you can use that's worse....

    Unions walk away because Almost every real option to fight back has been outlawed ....

    Here I thought the union's best tactic was to walk out (i.e. go on strike), and you openly admit that they still can while claiming they have had their power curbed by law? Which is it? Unions can strike or unions have no legal options?

    Most tax 'irregularities' are dealt with by fixing the paperwork and paying the back taxes. The IRS only really cares about getting the money that's owed.

    Tell that to Wesley Snipes, Heidi Fleiss, Teresa & Joe Giudice, Leona Helmsley, Lauryn Hill, Pete Rose, Jeffrey (Ja Rule) Atkins and Darryl Strawberry

    All people who where either unwilling to pay or unable to pay their debts to the IRS. Truly the IRS doesn't come arrest you and toss you into debtor's prison until they have exhausted all other options. Wesley Snipes was an avowed, the IRS is illegal, idiot, who challenged them in public and didn't have the money to pay. They made an example of him.

    They got around this with Nixon by naming him an indicted coconspirator...

    First, there was an actual crime or two committed (Collusion is not a possible crime here)... Second, the charging document did NOT name Nixon, but everyone assumed the unnamed, uncharged conspirator was him.. Third, Nixon never was charged or went to jail (though Ford could be seen as responsible for that).

    There's nothing partisan about Republican Robert Mueller being allowed by a Republican Congress and Republican FBI director to continue and finish, come what may, his legitimate and legally appointed investigation into high crimes.

    LOL.. Two things you need to know. First, You cannot charge a president with a crime while in office. Second, be careful what you wish for. Muller may actually find a crime on the democrat side and then where will we be?

    Donald is going to prison. Donald Junior is going to prison. Others are going to prison. The question as asked, is Mike Pence also in legal jeopardy, stands as the most important thing we do not currently know much if at all.

    Again, for what? Include citations and what crimes you think took place because this whole "He's obviously guilty!" without actually telling us of what is ridiculous political claptrap and wishful thinking.

    BTW, Don Jr was pretty much out of harms way a this point. They released a pile of documents on this the last few days. He didn't do anything wrong.

    Trump HAS been unfairly treated by the Washington Post.. But I doubt Trump is after Bozo because of it. But even if he is, who cares? Bozo is a big boy., he can take it.
