I think you're on to something with the gamification angle. Attaching a ScanGauge to my car's diagnostic port and setting it to show daily miles per gallon has improved my mileage, because I view it as a challenge to get a higher "score". Of course, there are limits, as I mentioned above.
[snark]And when you mention rewards that don't ultimately don't mean anything, I am reminded of communications majors.[/snark]
Or the Middle East. A large number of young men with no acceptable sexual outlet lets to violent instability. Video games and porn are a safety valve, if anything. Not that I would expect an ivory tower type like Zimbardo to actually realize that.
You hit the proverbial nail on the head. The mindset of "a few people have a problem with it, so it's a problem for everyone" gave us wonderful things like Prohibition and the War on (Some) Drugs. Look how well those turned out!
kids who will have spent 2 or 3x as much time playing diablo this semester as they have on one of their courses
Considering the job market those kids will graduate into, avoiding reality through video games is a fairly chemical-free coping mechanism. How do you convince a kid to focus on his education when he or she sees educated workers (perhaps even some of his or her teachers) getting laid off? What's the reward for doing well in school if income security is obviously off the table?
Interesting bit: Both of the attorneys I know well enough to forward/. links to replied almost identically. Their points (summarized by a non-attorney):
1. This woman is insane.
2. This woman not only has no case, but is in fact a ripe target for a libel suit.
3. Regarding item 2, clearly she has not received any actual legal advice in quite some time.
4. Her behavior is why jokes (and serious statements) about violence against attorneys aren't condemned very often.
If you chose to assert no rights over the picture, that is your choice. Jay Lee chose otherwise. I'm sure you wouldn't want him making the choice for you any more than he would want you making the choice for him.
He wasn't abusing the system, and there was no perjury involved. The only unexpected consequences were from some of the hosting providers (GoDaddy being the one in this particular case) simply suspending accounts when receiving the notices, instead of contacting their clients to arrange removal of the photograph. That he made special arrangements for (what he initially thought was) a worthy cause afterwards is perfectly legal. If you think it isn't, run that scenario by an attorney you know and see what they say.
I once worked for a place that was going through a bankruptcy. Even though all creditors had theoretically been dealt with, there were still a couple collection agencies that chose to not understand that. Because I'm not intimidated by veiled lawsuit threats (or unveiled ones, for that matter), I wound up being "the guy who screens calls". I got quite good at stalling, getting "interrupted" and generally dragging out calls. This eliminated most of the collection calls with a couple of weeks of this treatment. However, there was one collector who, despite getting worked into a frothing rage on a regular basis, kept calling. Eventually, after he had raged for a bit and was catching his breath (I like to think I shortened his life by several years), I explained my tactics to him. At first, he didn't get it, but after I explained that I knew about call time metrics and that I was messing his up on purpose, he REALLY freaked out. After another 5 minutes or so, I pointed out that keeping on the line with me wasn't improving his numbers. He never called back after that.
Just remember: at a certain point, they aren't wasting your time - they are wasting their own time and amusing you in the process.
It's not only taxes: credit/debit card processors take their cut, too.
I was kind of hoping that a TROLLID system would be developed for Internet forum posters.

I played SWTOR a little bit, but I would be a hypocrit dumping my exwife who I still cared for if I did the very things that destroyed her.
So, if your ex had a drinking problem, you'd never touch alcohol again?

I'm not sure if that's the porn or the video games talking.
Why can't it be both?
For a lot of people, life sucks no matter what. But you feel more comfortable when you see those people sharing your misery. Classy!
Worst. Generalization. Ever.
Sorry, had to do it.
Exactly.

Amazing how effective a notice of copyright violation can be, isn't it?

Fortunately, her hosting provider has a link for reporting such things.
Sadly, a similar argument is made by the RIAA/MPAA: "We cannot use the DMCA, because it isn't effective enough. So, we need something MORE draconian."
If someone wronged me and I had the power, I would totally send them to Guantanamo.
if you don't want someone to "take" your stuff, don't post it on-line
I take it you don't keep your money in any banks that offer online banking.
Damned tempting submit button...
... the shiny, candy-like button!

And that will stop digital distribution how?
We can only hope that a capable administrator like Hank Scorpio is running this project.
At a sufficient level of incompetence, you don't realize that you are being malicious. You are so incompetent you cannot even see your own malice.
Would that be called the Dunning-Freddy Krueger Effect?
... complexity of fax machines.
FTFM... sigh.
