As a late 30 something IT manager, I see all too often people sitting in meetings poking at whatever gadget they have on them only to be completely blind-sided when someone in the meeting asks them a question. Your boss may want you in that meeting as the information might be back story for a business problem that he or she is going to look to you to solve.
If you lose money on every sale and add volume, you're losing loads of money fast. That's hardly smart.
Sometimes there may be reasons to do this (like getting a foothold in a market), these tablets ain't it I think. Probably these are just write-offs, and any money they get for 'em is better than tossing the remainder of their stocks.

On a side note, when one cancels an account Netflix asks what your primary source of TV and Movies will be. The last option for both is "Bootleg DVDs".
