The don't make money exclusively through Chrome. Regardless of which browser you use they've got advertising services which work across them all (Gmail/Google Search/Docs etc.) DoubleClick and Ad Sense come to mind.

They make much more money in long term if they don't have to keep paying royalties other browsers. The money they pay to other browsers are recurring, but if they promote their own browser they have a much better long term thing, and can eventually save a lot more. Remember that they have to pay royalties for every ad click. That's a sizable chunk of for all ads, and $300 million a year isn't small change, even to Google. And that is only one browser, they have to do the same for all.

Google does need other browsers too, mainly for antitrust issues. They're already being investigated for monopoly abuse in EU and U.S. senators are suggesting that FDC looks into Google's monopoly abuse in U.S. too. EU just recently postponed Google's purchase of Motorola Mobility and may even deny it completely. They have been abusing advertisers on their network by telling that they are not allowed to run same ads on competitors networks. They have a monopoly on internet advertising, and that is the point many are missing. Their antitrust issues aren't about people using Google for searching, but abusing advertisers and other ad networks. After all, Google's customers aren't users - they are merely the product they sell.

Google cannot handle any more antitrust issues than they currently have.

So it's very easy to see why Google would be willing to fund Mozilla

That is true, but not for the reasons stated. Google is paying Mozilla around $100 million of commissions per year. By the very nature of the deal that relationship is poisoned. Note that Peter is an engineer, and it is very easy to say they want "better web" and stuff like that, but if Google could avoid paying $100 million a year, they would do so. It's better to put that money into their own product, and they really want to do that, but they can't because they would lose users. Google profits from the deal, but at the same time they would want to improve their own market so they don't need to pay anyone else in future.

Did the guy mention that he copyrighted his work? If he put it out there with nothing indicating that, there's an argument that he put it into the public domain, but if he copyrighted the project in a README file or in the core code files, he's covered. If someone is violating the GPL license and selling a modified version of his work, I'd recommend he contact the Electronic Frontier Foundation, who can help defend him, most likely free of charge.

Short answer: Selling GPLed software (even software you did not personally author) is okay.

Jesus... It's amazing what crap a first poster can say. No, you can not sell GPLed software you didn't write, though you may charge a distribution fee, and you must provide a way to access the source code you're distributing. If some a-hole is charging $50-ish bucks for your software, take him down.

That's false. They don't have anything against freedom. If you try to start riots, then yes you're going to get problems. But this is based on what majority of Chinese want. They don't want riots causing deaths and problems, and support Chinese government to prevent those. It's democracy after all - you may not like it, but majority want that.

Google has a good marketing team tho - instead of announcing that they failed to profit in Chinese market, they turned it upside down and told they're getting off for ethical reasons to make it look less failure.

They also give unlimited bandwidth so you don't need to worry about extra costs, and they have three datacenters. Two in US (Chicago and Denver) and one in EU (Czech). Servers are also quickly set up. They're an established company too. I've had a few porn sites hosted there, and anyone in the industry knows how demanding those can be on hardware and bandwidth. Never had any problems with FDC tho. Their VPS plans start at $9/month which is hard to beat. Even shitty providers have higher price.

I would avoid any unknown company. While there most likely are many good ones that are less known, it's a hit or miss. Sometimes they just close, either because it was unprofitable for them or just for no reason. There's many VPS providers who are just run by some guy, who leases the servers from DC's. So go with established company that has their own datacenters and years of experience. You save lots of headache.
