  1. What to learn from this article: on WINE: A New Place for KLEZ to Play? · · Score: 1
    Hi all,
this article proofs the validity of an old saying:

You just shouldn't believe everything that is published on the web!

You may believe me, this 'article' on linuxguru.net _is_ a Hoax! :-D

Please see yourself - I am sure after reading it all you will agree to me:

    They wrote: (...)
Finally, the most important 'bug' most distributions have,
is allowing a Windows executable to be run with wine without
an obvious chance for interception, by default. Sure, it
comes up with a window, telling you that wine is running,
and allowing you to disable the notice, however, it does
NOT warn you about the application being executed in such
a way that you could stop it before it was started.
    (...)

This has always been, is and will ever be *wrong*!

The contrary is true: An explicit warning dialog is shown and the user must click on [Open] there - which is *not* the default button.

e.g. If the user clicks on an attachment called ek_1.exe the dialog will look like this:
    "Open attachment 'ek_1.exe' with 'WINE'?
Note that opening an attachment may compromise your system's security!"

    Please have a look: screenshot_1

So there is *no* automatic execution of the windows binary, and the user is told exactly what would happen if she clicks the [Open] button, the warning dialog (showing a yellow exclamation sign) is eays to understand:

    • It explains _what_ will be loaded/executed and
    • it explains _how_ this would be done: by running WINE.
So it is clear that the statements made in this linuxguru.net article are absolutely wrong.

IMHO this is a Hoax published shortly before the release of KDE 3.1
    - perhaps in order to apply some FUD technics to potential KDE users.

  2. This is *good* news! (despite of the flame wars) on Gnome On Dell's Business PCs · · Score: 1

    • Gnome On Dell's Business PCs

    Dear flame warriors,
I am sorry but this definitely is good news!

Being a KDE enthusiast myself I cannot but accept the fact that there is now a large PC seller declaring they'll have Linux preloaded on (no, not all but at least some of) their business PCs.

Why is this good news to a KDE fan?

Because it is good news to a Linux fan!

I might be wrong but this could well be the beginning of a new area where at the end people will have to ask for Windows -- in the rare case they insist in buying a copy of it with their new PC.

That's my dream and I step by step see it become true:

    • OEMs start putting Linux on the machines by default!
    • Users see absolutely no need to still have Windows on their PCs!
    • Instead of selling Windows to each customer, dealers choose give them the better system!

Of course if it were KDE to be preinstalled I'ld smile even more. But the most important fact in my opinion is - that it is Linux!

I am looking forward to the day when I can go to any computer shop to get some new machines and they kindly ask me:

"Would you like us to put the new KDE on the disks or do you prefer running GNOME. (Of course we could also give you just X with the windowmanager of your choice...)"

Those of you prefering to fight against 'the others', please consider having a short look at this page:

  3. This "A vs. B" is *dangerous* and a waste of time. on Reasoning Behind The KDE League · · Score: 1

Don't get me wrong: I *do* believe in competition and I do not think all Linux users are expecting to wake up some day just to find themselfs in a Windows-like world where there is ONLY ONE desktop environment left and no alternative at all.

But I would like to make clear that those 'political' fighting about KDE and GNOME just does not help anybody (except those people dis-liking free software anyway).

To see the implications of that you might want to have a look at this wonderful article written by Byron Sonne. I am sure you'll like it. :-)

Do you happen to live in a so-called 'big' town like NY or Frankfurt?

If yes, please close your eyes now and listen carefully...
What you hear now won't go away, day and night, no matter how you try - the background noise of the city is allways there!

Could you imagine it being *worth* living in really rural Sweden to find a good place to live, to rise your children, to write good Software...

Believe me: I am kind of frustrated each time I hear about people living in a beautiful area like e.g. Klarälvdalen as for several reasons I can not move there myself.
