  1. email voice messages - linux on Design a Virtual Office with Open Source? · · Score: 5, Informative

VOCP does this. Multiple mailboxes, faxes, faxback,
downloads messages via the web so that they can be played anywhere. Uses perl and python.

Works very well, I have used it for over 3 years.

And of course, it's GPL licensed, and downloadable at vocp.sourceforge.net.

  2. NO MONEY FOR MUSIC on The Downward Spiral of Music Retailing · · Score: 4, Insightful

No, that's just bull, the fact is, I and many, many others just don't have the money to spend on music...plain and simple. It's just not a high enough priority.

  3. Kernel Modifications on Win4Lin 5.0 Reviewed · · Score: 3, Informative

I have Win4Lin and will no longer use it.
The Kernel modifications necessary to run it are too much to keep up with. Everytime you upgrade you have to either wait on them to build a kernel or patch the kernel yourself. And they do not come out with new patches quickly. And they only seem to support the kernel that ships with your linux distribution.

It's a shame that they seem either not able to or refuse to incorporate their patch in the kernel. If they did then this would be a very cool package. As is, it works fine, just locks you into the shipping kernel or a home patched kernel to use it everytime you upgrade.

  4. More to life on What Should I Do With My Life? · · Score: 1

All of the comments seem to leave out what is really the most important aspect. Your "spiritual" need. We humans all have the built in need to "worship", some worship stuff, some worship sports figures, some Open Source software. But we all worship something.
"Happy are those conscious of their spiritual need".(Matthew 5:4). When you serve the true God in "spirit and truth" like the richest man of all time, Solomon did, the rest of the world's rewards are like "vanity and a striving after the wind". It's just stuff. Everlasting life, in a paradise earth, perfect health, no sickness, no death. Harmony with the rest of creation. Now that's happiness!

  5. Backups on Affordable Home Backups for 10-100G Systems? · · Score: 2, Interesting

First you must give consideration to what you really need to backup. I only do my home directory. I have a tar/gzip of /etc there. I burn my mp3's to cdrom as necessary. How much stuff do you really need to backup after that?

RAID 5 is not foolproof. I just had a server lose one disk which caused a second disk to go offline which toasted the whole array. I restored from tape.

Extra disks are not foolproof. I tried to boot SCO unix the other day and the harddrive no longer functions.

Tape has been the most reliable as long as it was written with a tape program that still exists. I have read 5 year old BRU tapes successfully.

I still use a 4MM DAT. It's small, so I don't backup much, only the necessities. But I know I can get it back!

  6. Is a well rounded education a good one? on Is A "Well-Rounded" Education a Good One? · · Score: 1

Wow, the thread demonstrates the results, there are a lot of well educated idiots.

Success and happiness depend on making good sound choices in life, living by good solid principles and morals, honesty, hard work, committment. My "education" did not help me in those regards, my later training in life, a lot of it by life experience did. Being able to "think" is a useful ability only if one applies it in a manner that is not in their and everyone elses detriment. Most of us use it only to advance our own agenda, be it financial or otherwise. Mostly that doesn't bring success or happiness.

Study the creator, not the created, the rest will fall into place.

  7. Personal Backups on Tape Backups for Personal Use, Using Linux? · · Score: 1

I got a 4MM DAT cheap, from work, we outgrew it. 120 meter tapes are are about $7 each. They hold about 3.7 GB uncompressed. I use Mandrake 8.0 but I also own Caldera. And Caldera comes with the free version of Personal BRU, an excellent backup program, it uses a proprietary format on the tape that calculates CRC's as it writes and automatically verifies that the tape is readable, it will verify volume1 before loading volume2 and then verify it before loading volume3 so you don't have to keep changing tapes back and forth. Nice program and it works great for me. I Mount my Windoze partition and back it up that way too, I blew it away once and put it back from tape and it worked perfectly. PK

  8. M$ Monopoly on Second Thoughts: Microsoft on Trial · · Score: 1

I fear most miss the real problem with M$. It's not so much that their software sucks, it's that you could not buy a Personal Computer without paying for their software for many years. And you still can't from most of the big vendors in the USA. A PC is the same price with Red Hat on it or with a host of bundled WinWare. Dell and Compaq have licensing deals that require them to pay M$ for every machine, regardless of wether or not they ship Windoze with it. So people have accepted Windoze as the "standard", why not, DOS was the same, you paid for it wether or not you used it. Again, a contractual obligation of the vendors. That's the crime, no PC should be mandatorily shipped with anything but what the customer has specifically requested. And the customer should only pay for what they've requested, not the M$ tax. That is taxation without representation. Something that wars have been fought over because it's just wrong!
