Current implementations of Dishplayer and Ultimate TV, and Open TV (The new PVR from DISH networks), are not likely to be affected by this patent.
While digital signals from a satellite are mentioned in the header of the patent, the specifics of the implementation do not infringe on the specifics of the patent.
Dishplayer et al stream the digital signal to the hard drive directly and then stream the digital signal to the decryption (satellite) receiver.
The TIVO patent specifically requires the "input section" to convert the TV stream into MPEG format.
This conversion is never done by the Ultimate TV or Dishplayer products.
A loose interpretation of the implementation could, very well infringe on streaming video products that use MPEG, such as real video, and media player.
However, of course, IANAL and am probably wrong...
This form of protection seems to be of the type that requires the box to "phone homw".
I suspect this phone home Address will probably be hard wired into the whistler implementation, and my guess it will be a dedicated address SOLELY for this purpose.
So, slashdotters, how long before instructions either at the localhost file, or even better at the firewall, that blocks the address, and prevents the machine from phoning home?
I suspect the machine will be considered authuntecated by default.
I wanted to check out various sites to see it's rendering quality...
(Quite good, expected behavior)...
But crashed on second site I went to...
http://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator/main.htm l
Rollover menu's on the left... Crash when I mouse over them...
Dang it...
That would be too painful to be useful...
Ok, you had me going...
but... This is FOUR HUNDRED FREAKIN dollars...
I can buy 2 handspring visors for the price of one of these, and I get MORE than a remote, I get a backup...
As we know it...
This will be the thing that will change everything.
VoIP is a low bandwidth application and is essentially unstoppable.
In the US, unlimited free local calls, are considered a birthright. (and hence unmetered Internet Access).
The internet allows packets to move freely over the entire internet.
Phone Companies SURVIVE off of pay per minute LD.
This is going to be the biggest conflict of all on the Internet. Billion Dollar companies do NOT die without a fight....
This will come to pass for XBOX.
In the marketplace of consumer game consoles that are otherwise Whistler boxes, Microsoft will have to do something like this, or there will be an outbreak of "console" virii and other bad things. The only protection Microsoft will have is to not let "unauthorized" code from running...
While it is true that a crippled version may be h@xable...
This is NOT likely to be able to do it... Sort of like, well, I will just delete all the text.
ALL EDITING FUNCTIONS are likely to be disabled.
The interesting question is how can they enforce that.
Standard hacks may be as simple as making the software function ONLY when expired by simply changing a test somewher from eq to neq.
Accountants now consider software licenses to be a capital expense.
Software "rentals" are likely to be considered an operating expense, and will be managed differently in a corporation. Like toner, paper, and christmas parties.
I think that this is going to start some interesting money fights when it comes to budget time. And will have some interesting effects on IT departments managing deployment and payment.
