Yes I did, and I'd already used it to disable them before I asked any of these inane questions. In the post you replied to I was asking if there were a more nuanced way to deal with this problem than totally disabling said protocols.

I'm simply trying to get a better handle on how all these parts tie together since A) I'm obviously not quite sure of the nitty gritty details, and 2) I'd say that considering recent events, there's a decent chance we'll be looking at yet another variation on this problem next week. I also figured that if I'm a little unsure, there's probably a few other Mac users out there who would appreciate reading answers to the same stupid questions.

  2. Re:Needs to be addressed at a higher layer. on One More Mac Protocol Handler Exploit · · Score: 1

I guess I was thinking about it in such a way that ports are roughly equivalent to protocols. So do things like afp:// and disk:// not map 1:1 to a given port? And if not, is there no way to selectively filter them, other than either map them to a given app or ignore them completely?

  3. What about IPFW? on One More Mac Protocol Handler Exploit · · Score: 3, Interesting

Shouldn't it be possible to block these protocols via IPFW? Not that it would be any more effective than things like RC Default App (or whatever it's called), but it would seem more elegant to me to be able to protect against these issues without requiring third party software.

Kinda sorta speaking of which, I use (and *gasp* paid for) an app called Little Snitch which essentially makes IPFW interactive, intercepting network access to/from each app and getting my approval on a temporary/permanent and/or server/port basis. Prevents things from phoning home, and can give you some good insights as to what's talking to what.

I also use a utility called Deny IP, which lets me bring up a translucent overlay (kinda like the volume control) showing details on all active connections. Doesn't prevent anything unexpected from happening, but lets me see what is happening and prevent it from recurring.

Also, while I've got your attention, any of you Mac using slashbots know of a utility to automagically turn Apache and IPFW logs into an SQL database in (mostly) real time?

A few years ago I started taking Gingko Biloba for the usual reasons. When I changed jobs and had to be at the office by 6:30am, I started taking it (and all my other vitamins and shit) right before bedtime. The Gingko kicks in while I'm asleep, and when I first wake up at 5:30 to hit the snooze button, I'm awake enough that I may snooze, but I don't fall deep asleep and can still hit the button again in nine minutes.

It also ensures that I stay conscious long enough to get to work and make a pot of coffee so I don't murder my coworkers.

I guess I don't really care enough to be truly bothered by it. To be honest, I'm sort of fascinated by it all in that amateur sociologist sort of way that I get when I spend a lot of time people watching. If you check out my posting history you'll see that I've only relatively recently started getting prolific around these parts.

It is a cool feeling when I get a little message telling me that 17 other geeks burned mod points to say they liked what I have to say, and while it is slightly annoying to get a slew of -1, Overrated mods, I just assume they're beer drinking, Windows using, SUV driving, Bush supporters and go about my business. But then again, I got a +1, Underrated for the parent comment, so I know that at least you and one other person agree with me. As my .sig reflects, I think the /. moderation system has some significant flaws, but I'm actually one of the idealistic True Believers who moderates responsibly, metamoderates regularly and flosses daily because I think that it really is a cool system overall.

I was gonna reply by pasting some text from the PPT, but I see you've already got that... it seems to me (very much not a developer, nor an XWindows user) that they're reorganizing things more along the lines of XWindows; a 3D API (DirectX) for low level 3D stuff, and a window manager (Avalon) for, well, window management.

As a Mac user, you could also look at it is Avalon kinda sorta equals Quartz, but I don't think it's as 1:1 as the XWindows analogy.

(The *nix developers and more knowledgeable XWindows users will now commence flaming me into next week for so thoroughly muddying the waters.)
