..people would clearly just run proxies to pool everybody's requests through a single machine
Yes, this will happen but only in a limited extent. How many people will really set up a proxy for others to route through it? If some poeple really do this, the performance of these proxies will be so slow that people will still pay a penny rather to wait for 5 mins for a page to download.
It isn't similar to napster either. You need to pay for a CD if you don't wait for the download. In micropayment, you just need to pay for a penny if you don't wait for it. That's a great difference.
I am working on something similar in my FYP actually.
After I did some research on micropayment, I make a conclusion that it is not the technology itself that makes micropayment not feasible, but the willingness of people to pay. People won't pay as long as they can find some alternatives. So, the key is to price each page at a very low price. The price should be so low that you won't bother to find the alternatives. It is just like the first time you use your mobile phone. When mobile phone is first introduced to the market, instead of using it all the time, you may still find a telephone booth to make unimportant calls. As telephone charges becomes lower and lower, you won't bother to do that any more. That's exactly what the seller needs to do to make micropayment works! Different business should have very different pricing. For example, google can set the price at 10 cents for 100 search while news.com can price its article at 1/10 cent.
Business at first may not be able to maintain a revenue, but when more and more people familiarize themselves with this model, they will be able to make real money.
I am an Asian and I don't like or dislike any countries. But what I learn from this tragedy is that US should have done something really dirty in the Middle East, otherwise no one will get this far to make such a crazy attack. I don't care about politics before so if u ask me the history between US and Middle East I can tell u nothing. But what I have read these few days from newspaper, usenet, slashdot etc. tells me US doesn't act as good as it looks. Selling guns, missiles or any other kind of weapons to help another country to kill their enemy doesn't conform to the image that US gives me before.
Government always start to do something or realise their fault when large amount of lifes are lost, I am not asking other people to do the same thing in future protest, but that's the fact how government handle conflicts and problems that leads to this tragedy.
I get an idea. This device can help those
who lost the power to speak. What they need is a
little device with a small keyboard tied to
their palm or wrist so they can type to speak!
Somethings doesn't improved much in the last 50
years. Ask your mom how much time does she take
to clean your house. It probably takes more or less the same time even with the help of machine.
The transportation of physical items also doesn't
change much in this two decades, you still need
many hours of flight to go from one point of the
earth to the opposite side. Interesting, right?
It seems that most effort are put in the computer
industries while other really important stuff are
left behind.
I just see this movie as I know that it is a
classic from many sources. I am please to tell
you all that this movie is absolutely BORING!
I can't imagine there is such a boring movie.
Don't be fool by your mates who tell you how
great the ideas are(yes, they are, but 20 years
before, I am sure u will not be surprised when u
see them) The most unbearable thing is that the
last part of the movie play a 30 mins "special effects" with color floating on the screen which seems to say that IT IS ABOUT TIME TO HAVE A NAP..

Here is a working demo of a similar but much smaller AI program called winalice, which is the winner of the 2000 Loebner Contest, worth a try.
