I thought I was the only inexperienced programmer here. I'm a junior high school student, and like you I got intimidated with the fast changing open-source world. It seems it's a really fast race.
I also learned programming by myself. But gaining real experience seems haunting. So I started to join a starting project and inquired for a small job. I asked for the job of a web designer. Luckily, I got it. I also told them I can help in LaTeX formatting and some small c++ coding.

.Net will succeed like Java did. .Net is greedy, Java is not.
