Unmitigated nonsense -- "raping the planet" is a nice phrase, but not true. Americans make a mess, sure -- and we're the only country to clean up after ourselves.

clean up ???!?! Who are you kidding? 4 percent of the worlds population and 23 percent of the CO2 emmissions, and the US are still pulling out of the Kyoto agreement because George W has to payback all the companies who funded his campagain.

Political satirist (sp?) are having a field day in Europe since Americans elected that monkey as their president

  2. Re:Yeah but, chip making isn't as easy as writing on Open-Source Processors · · Score: 1
There are many high level design languages for chip design, VHDL and simulators for testing designs prior to fab.

hahaha... using VHDL every day believe me RTL level coding is no more a high level language than asm !! (well maybe a small bit) Any fancy features of the language are not supported by Synopsys (ie records (equivalent of C's types)) . There's a big difference between behavioural and RTL coding (one is for simulation only the other for creating a chip)

The second point is that the actual coding is a relatively small part of a design. Dont forget verification (block and chip level), synthesis (converting code to gates), timing analysis, formal verification, and layout.

Third point, the tools for the above are expensive A synopsys licence is 150k+, chrysilis(sp) (formal verification) is 100k+ etc.....

Fourth point, expierence counts for a lot With C you can compile a program run it and see you mistakes and learn from it. In IC design, one spin on a fab to see the results of your design costs 100k+ ie. get it right first or second time. ( in our company we had NEVER had to pay for a re-spin).

Designing chips is not very much like programming. Chalk and cheese.

  3. do you really think Sun uses it? on Sun Releases Grid 5.2 for Linux · · Score: 2

Gridware is definately an also-ran in the distributed environment at the moment. Companies who use this type of product generally go for LSF, a commercial product. Many big IC design houses use LSF to use the spare cycles from workstation cpu's + to run their compute farms. Sun is one of these companies. If you want a GPL equivalent go for GNQS.

True but amp modelling is now well on it's way to wiping out the tube amp. (For recording I'd take my POD any day before my JCM 800) http://www.line6.com
