Yeah come on guys lets not get our knickers in a twist. I'm also a Brit and have absoultly no problem with cameras scanning my face. I've not done anything so I don't care, this is for the greater good if you ask me. Replying to the first post Brit, I lived in Manhatten for a month and I felt completly safe wandering around drunk on my own late at night - hang on - maybe it was cause I was drunk that I felt safe ;-) Seriously though, I found New York just as safe as London - even Harlem. And it was a damn site more lively and better weather! I can't help adding (and I really shouldn't) that the americans are hoplessly enslaved to their flag. They talk of freedom this, freedom that, etc etc, i didn't have the freedom to have a beer on the beach, chill out with a splif, go dancing on ecstacy, sit out on the fire escape at night (yep, that's illegal in New York), or even J Walk (whatever that is)! A cop even stop me walking down a street with a can of beer in my hand at 3 in the morning on my way home from a club. It's illegal NOT to have a beer in your hand at that time in England.

this kind of thing has shown to work well in some places and badly in others. Works really well in England, brought down prices - was managed terribly in california, messed up big time. This would seem to suggest the idea isn't flawed but the roll out sometimes has been. Essentially the purpose is to make the companies more efficient, lumbering monopolies with no competition generally have no insentives.

this has already been answered above, apparently the signal delivered is independent of the power. They just shove a seperate radio signal down the line. Admittedly the power their radio transcivers might come from the same place as your recently died power

Yep, that's what a lot of radio hams are worried about. Messing around in the 2 to 30 MHZ bands puts you smack bang all over the HF frequencies, and these are all liable to bounce around the world if you use too much power (1 watt can have you talking from England to Aus). you are saying it "can't be done". get real. Of course it can be done. All the things you mention are things the technology will have to take into account. The collisions would make it unusable???? What, you think they'd try to put every place in new york city on one wire? You think it would be impossible to seperate circuits?

don't forget IBM outsource some of their r&d to university's, the hard drive stuff was done at my uni a few years ago, for penny's! Of course they fund a lot of stuff and only some of them make big bucks so there is nothing wrong with the uni's making no money out of it, other than funding pure research of course.

Well I think this stat backups the obvious argument that helmets save lives. only 54% of those that died had helmets rather than 67% if the wearing of helmets was no help in saving lives. Wether or not you think the goverment should enforce the wearing of helmets is of course a matter of wether the government should take away peoples liberty at certain times to save their lives. I offer no opinion on this!
