The best part is that Gnome, andprobably KDE (I don't use so I don't know) is getting closer to the usnifomity the author expects. Gnome 2 do have unified key binding for applications. The API is making it easier to applications to conform to the standards. You do have a choice of using programs from diferent "desktops" at the cost of having a mess, but if you stick to one, be it KDE or gnome, you will end up with a very consistent desktop.
Not true, GPL states that you cannot take away the right to copy/use/alter from the user. So if I buy one seat from them GPL allows me to install in any number of machines I want. The problem is that this distributions have some part of them, probably an indispensable one, that was created in-house, this part is lisensed so you can only legaly be used in one seat, without it the distro won't work.:-/
It seems that someone has finaly found a loop hole in GPL.
Not that the movie has to agree with my preconceptions. When I say goals, I do not mean political messages, instead I mean a general goal. For instance a trhee Stooges movies has the goal of being a silly comedy while Blade Runner has the goal of being a serious and dark sci-fy movie.
You must realise that I am not geting into details here. And also I am not being final. Sometimes I am in the mood for a silly teen age movie so I go out and rent "American pie", some other times I would like something denser so I may go out and watch " Promisses" and yet other times I want to have fun and I will watch "Jurasic park" or "Spiderman".
Sumarizing, I sometimes do not watch a movie because of my "preconceptions" but this dosen't mean that in the future I will not be in mood for this movie.
I tend to disagree with this "plausability" argument, why do movies have to be plausible? why do they have to be belivable? And most important, why plausability ranks over entretainment? A movie is made with a clear intention, some movies like Gattaka is made to be more serious other movies like Jurasic Park tend to be less plausible in favor of being more fun. Jurasic Park is a roller coaster ride, and it has no intention to raise political questions (and it should not, in my opinion).
I like both movies, gattaka and Jurasic Park, but I think it is fair to judge Jurassic Park with the same ruller set that I judge gattaka or Blade Runner. The movie to be good, in my opinion has to achieve it's goal. It is easy to realise what is the goal of a movie by it's teaser trailers, if I am not interested in a particular goal, I simply skip the movie, since I would not like it anyway.
At a certain level every security measure in computer are from obscurity, you are safe because no one knows your password. But the problem arises when the design of the security measures must be made secret to keep it safe. I don't know if this is the case with the smart cards, or at least with all of them.
Limiting access to minors is one thing, while protecting free speach is other. It is very diferent, if you say that videogames are not protected by the freedom of speach, then one could censor a videogame, base in the fact that it has porn or violence. Censorship means that you can get the game even thougth you an adult.
If you limit the access of some videogames to children, would be just like a playboy magazine or alcoholic drinks, that can only be sold to an adult. One could argue that this is also bad, but it is certainly better then the above option. And if you are a father that don't agree with this, you can aways buy the game for your kid.
The article seem to indicate that this is case for this law.
Great point, If could I would moderate you to the top. It is important to read the message that CNN and other american media is telling everyone. American media and goverment tends to label XXX as evil and YYY as good. There is no grays level between evil and good. This certanly don't help.
Another possible scenario: Person with same brand/color car parks behind bait and leaves keys inside. Thief stoles persons car. Person picks up the bait car thinking it is their car.
you seem to be describing a console crash, when X crash and lock up your console you maybe out of luck. But if you have another computer at hand and a sshd runing in the locked computer you should be able to restore or in the worst condition restart your machine cleanly (sometimes X messes with your grafic card badly).
Why set aside the lenght of the movie?? This is the single point of failure of this (wonderful in my opinion) movie. The movie is too long and has too many character and settings for a single movie. People who didn't read the book find hard too follow the movie, and you blame the director to withdraw a character that has very little impact in the rest of the movie?
I do belive that the movie was realy wonderful, but I had read the book (even thought I remembered very little from it). I knew the characters and settings I was expecting things to be there, and they were there.
A movie is not a book, and certanly you cannot expect that it would be that book witch is very rich in detais on settings, history and characters. Peter Jackson and his crew made the right choice (in my humble opinion) to take out tom bombadil and even some very good scenes that he implied like the old man willow or the barrow downs. People should be leaving the theaters and longing to read the book, not thinking that they just lost three hours of their lifes.
Well I will stop before people start moderating me as a troll or flamebait.:-)
Shure and supose they didn't teach you about parsers, just because there is already plenty of parser ready to use. no fast forward 50/100 years. Everyone uses the parsers that were already made in the last century, and some one found a security flaw in one of those ancient parses, but no one living has any idea on how to make a parser, after all there were parsers already made...
Seriously you NEED to teach people how stuff is build and how they work. It's not enougth to simply step up to the next level of abstraction (that is suposed to be simpler). Following the same reasoning I could rant about how CS schools is teaching "C" when there is already "visual basic" witch is simpler and it is probably what you would need in the future.

Here in Brasil I pay +/- $55,00 for a 256/120 Mb/s DSL line. But still there are a great number of people who still uses the old modem.
I just thougth in something, have you watched those episodes on the TV before you downloaded them? If you had, hen you "bought" them, tv series are made to draw your atention to the TV and make the air price expensive to add. Even if you do not seens those episodes that you have, but you watch the series on TV this could be a success of the "piracy addvertisement".
Just a thought.:-) I hope it dosen't ofend you, I can never say when one comment will make people mad, and that is never my intention.
BTW, the word "piracy" seems to me to be highly inappropriate if one thinks of what pirates usually do. We could just as well call it "terrorism".
Shure and the next thing you will see is the MPAA bombing some housing with the backup of president Bush himself.
Seriuosly you are advice is to change one word (piracy) because of what 16th century (17th or even 18th century, I'm realy not that good with history) people did, for one that is used now and is on all the media? I realy don't think it is a good idea.
But that's it you're just one person, sales are made in numbers. I am shure that like you exist many people that would not trade their pirate goods. But the majority will trade their "low quality" copy for a better official one.
Piracy is the best free advertisement that any industry may have. People will always want to buy the original, and if they can afford it they will. they will sample the pirate and then buy the original.
there is a common belief that anything that is pirate is in fact of worst quality then the original one. This quality need not to be in the format (video quality, cristal sound and stuff like that), I believe that people will buy quality packing and quality extras. How many DVD rips you seen with tons of extra features, and how many came with say a poster of the movie?
even MS use piracy to enhance their monopoly, why do you think that every one is familiar with their enviroment?

machines and disks are cheap
What you are forgetting that bandwidth is not so cheap, and it is the in fact the bottleneck in the digital video.
You can aways record the entire legal transaction and then replay it every time. If you manage to "sandbox" the program so it will run perfectly equal conditions it will be fooled to work. Even random numbers choosen by the program would be choosen equaly since the program is runing in the exactly same environment (time/date, I/O, etc). Of course it could not access new information from the outside world, so this scheme would not work to access online resources.
Well I guess you have a point, and I will not discuss it, shure people have the right to do not like with others. I am not telling that anyone should do as I said. In fact everithing that I say be it here on-line, in person or by phone are my opinions. based in that (my opinion) I do think that those people that hatee to interact do have a problem, that could be as trivial as finding better friends.
once again, those are my opinions, and they are just as good as the next person's one.
The basic diference is social interaction, for those that don't have an idea of what this is I will explain. Social interaction is made when ypup interact, face to face, with fesh and bones people. This kind of interaction can be very pleasant and sometime it could even ending in meeting a significant other.:-)
Seriously thought, I don't think that "vegitate" in a club with friends is as bad. It dosen't matter if all the subjects that you talk among your friends is as trivial as the last episode of friends. Social interaction is very important and rewarding. You should try.:-)
You're compleatly right, I have seen this kind of atitude all over, why don't people think that when you ar simply adding options the product/service/whatever can keep exactly the way it was if you simply don't take the new choice? It seems that more people then we realise wishes that everyone would follow what they think is the path, and that is sad, because I see even in open source sites (that suposed to be for the freedom).

Even if their claim is 100% true I do have two questions about this tecnology before puting any money in it.
How cheap (or expensive) this chips are?
How long they endure?
If they costs 1000s of dolars and work for a year I would stick to the cooler fan and my good old refrigerator.

This is how it destroys other companies that are menacing them, why do you think they would abandon such power?
Even if this would become true, I would think that something fish would be hidden in this "striped down" version.
