Our position as the mightiest nation in the world does not come cheap. Military spending in the US is sacrosanct. We wish not to have our empire fade into disarray as quickly as those which have come before us.
Not to mention our military comes in handy at protecting our various economic interests around the world. So you'd have to subtract the $300 billion dollar annual military budget from all the money we make due to those interests continuing to exist before you could make any final judgements.
How about we let our American engineers become more creative to justify the salraies they are used to instead of artificially re-inforcing their industry by using anti-capitalist and anti-immgration policies?
In case you hadn't noticed, the change a job every 3 years attitude died with the dot.coms. Its not seen as a good thing anymore. Instead its seen as a sign of a person who doesn't have the discipline or maturity to sit still for any great lenght of time and is not comitted to anything.
I'm sorry. You don't seem to understand capitalism. This is ironic coming from one who claims so many others have such a small grasp on economics.
Your labor is a service you sell. Why should someone pay more for your service then they absolutely have to? Do you pay your cable company more then they ask for? Do you put an extra $40 in your heating or electric bills? I don't think so. So why should your employer pay you more then what you will work for?
....your proud of the fact that you can get tech jobs not solely for your technical competence, but because you are able to bullshit and schmooze your way around much better than the average geek?
And a true geek who believes in actual merit is supposed to take your advice why again....?
I mean I consider myself well read as well. I do love sci-fi but its not my limit. I've read everything Shakespear has written but if I were going for a tech job I'd never mention it. I would want to get hired based on my CORE competencies, not because of some offtopic book that I read.
As I look across the video game market today, on the PC and on the various big three consoles I've noticed a lack of games that absolutely fundamentally suck in just about every way imaginable. Its like game developers have suddenly "forgotten" how to create jerky blocky video game characters using 2-bit graphics. I mean is it impossible with all the power in these boxes to create something on par with Pong? I guess you can call this the pre-madonna syndrome.
Fortunately the Open Source community rides to the rescue once again to drive back the night. If there's one thing the OS community is known for its bad interfaces and horrible graphics. I have no doubt that right now a crack team of 3l33t h4x0rz are working on the very first 16-bit version of Tomb Raider, Daikaitana and Halo. Once they get all the bugs out and do some serious regression testing those games should be down to 8-bit and by the time they're proud enough of their work to offer it as a come one come all beta those games should be purring along at 4-bit goodness.
They'll probably call their gaming platform the "Emulator-Within-An-Emulator-Within-An-Emulator-Be owulfed" or EWAEWAEB for short. EWAEWAEB will revolutionize the video gaming world. Founding and core EWAEWAEB developers will be asked to go on the G4 Video Game Channel on Cable TV for endless interviews on how they pulled the rug from under the established gaming powers and saved the day for all of us.
Its truly good to know that there are still some people dedicated to REAL gaming in the world and not just sell outs who have a perverted blood lust for the blasphemous "realism" in today's games.
I guess it all comes down to this, do you want to be a mere worker all your life? Do you want to be just an employee until you die or do you ever want to own something other than your home maybe?
Perhaps the unionized workers should take advantage of their ill gotten good fortune and realize that being a wage slave, unionized or not, is not a good thing and take the time while they have it to train for better more upscale jobs so that one day they can become the owners and owners heirs that they so currently dispise.
Fortunately the overwhelming percentage of programming jobs and tasks nowhere approaches the level of life threatening status as that of a Surgeon. That makes those self-taught programmers out there every bit as good and qualified as your classically trained ones, thank you very much.
Listen to the madness you yourself are stating. You had to find 4 jobs in one year? Thats not something to be proud of. Thats not an accomplishment. Thats the sign of a fool who doesn't realize how badly this industry is treating him. Wake up and get a clue!
Modding my comment as flaimbait doesn't make it any less true. Innovation IS something the OSS community is in short supply of, no matter how much you want to convince yourselves otherwise.
Unfortunately the open source community isn't very capable when it comes to innovation. Just about every application you think of as innovative on the open source side has already been made and sold by proprietary software corporations.
You're missing the point. People would rather steal the software or pirate it from the internet rather then install the free open source alternatives such as GIMP.
You have literally no concept of what you speak of.
Mac OS X IS NextSTEP. Its simply the evolved form. It has never been pure "BSD". Darwin, the core of OS X, is released under the APSL license. IT WAS NEVER RELEASED UNDER A BSD LICENSE.
They did NOT screw up here. GNU-Darwin is a VERY insignificant project. By making Darwin open source, Apple has gained a lot of brownie points from the open source community. There are TONS of projects such as Fink (which is heads and tails better than GNU-Darwin and doesn't over-write your default binaries for example) which would not have begun were Darwin not open source.
I mean you drawing a distinction between Next code and BSD code proves just how much of an idiot you are. There has always been some BSD code inside of Next and thus by default now in OS X. Why doesn't Apple just use the BSD license? Probably because they're not as dumb as you are maybe? Corporations who like to remain profitable wisely retain as much control over their products as they possibly can. The APSL allows them to do this where as the BSD license would not.
This is not bad publicity. This is the rantings and ravings of one GNU zealot project head who just doomed his own project. The comments are 25 to 1 on the side of "What the hell is this guy thinking" not "Yes this man has principles which are to be respected!"
I dunno, maybe if you actually USED OS X it would help you when you go to comment on it.
This comment comes from an AC over at MacSlash. Its hilarious:
" It's called "grandstanding," and it's one of the few actual skills the GNU bozos have. Their skills aren't in software -- they have yet to create a single program that anyone outside the nerd clique wants to use. They literally can't give their stuff away."
..... is what happens when you don't keep pedantic technological politics separated from the technology itself. Now GNU-Darwin will creep further into irrelevance thus strengthening the position of the Fink project.
1. To enact regime change. Saddam is out, whoever we want is in. 2. To secure our access to oil. We don't actually want to seize the oil, just make sure its always available. 3. To practice and perfect our urban warfare techniques. Since we've never fought a large war in an urban setting, we need to fight this one in order to gain the necessary experience.
And yes for all intents and purposes the project is useless in comparison to the already established Linux and BSD operating systems. Hell even HURD's more useful now.
Give us a break. No one is perfect. We're working on re-routing all foreign judicial jurisdiction to the United States as fast as our Most Benevolent Hegemony can.
Alright thank you for the dash of much unwanted current events news. Now run along.

Someone please mod the comment I am responding to up! Thanks.

Supply and demand is indefeatable.

An OS is supposed to be like whatever you want it to be like. There is no established standard of what it should be.
Unfortunately the open source community isn't very capable when it comes to innovation. Just about every application you think of as innovative on the open source side has already been made and sold by proprietary software corporations.

The Islamic GAWD is the same as the Christian GAWD which is the same as the Jewish GAWD. I hope you weren't trying to draw a distinction between them.
Your sig is tooo funny lol
This only a minor setback for American Hegmony. Afterall, no Empire is perfect.

Sure you do.
You have a Principle of Being Practical.

We need to invade Iraq for several reasons.
