  1. Re:AdBlock: reserving the right... on DoubleClick Warns Against Ad-Blocking Browsers · · Score: 1, Interesting

That is funny because I am a few months away from implementing a KICK ASS site that will make thousands of open source users and programmers VERY happy and all for free.....which was to be supported by advertising. Just because some people have extra time to spend providing free content, it doesn't mean that everyone should have to give everything away. I understand the open source philosophy well and I am trying to contribute something which I think is ground breaking to the users for only the price of having to view some well place, non obtrusive, non pop-up ads.

After reading a lot of the comments here (and I consider a large portion of the slashdot crowd my target market) I think I need to re-evaluate my plan. Perhaps I would be better off going with a subscription service (yeah, those work well) or just selling the site software for individuals and businesses to use and make it closed source...At least that way I could profit (yes, I know it is an evil word to many here) from my Y E A R S of effort on this project.

For those bitching about having to view ANY ads, please elaborate on all of the free content you have contributed to the web. Also, even if you have contributed, have you noticed that our favorite little site here has advertising? So, maybe you can use a program to block the ad images and such, but all you are doing is killing the site you love so much just a little. If everyone did this to all sites, many quality sites would simply disappear.

  2. Re:Actually, it is. on Do You Want to Live Forever? · · Score: 0

You can generalize about any group of people but doing so makes you look like an idiot.

I was on welfare for a while. I had a wife and 2 - 4 children depending on the year. I took out student loans, got an education and now I am a critical part of my company's operation, highly respected, well paid and I also have a side business. So, between the interest on the student loans and the taxes I pay, I figure I was a pretty good investment for the country. My business even brings in money from other countries...as a matter of fact, 80% of my customers are from overseas.

So, while I'm sure you think your analysis of everyone on welfare is justified and brilliant, it is really just a generalized stereotype. Welfare helps a lot of people who deserve it and I personally know more than a few people who made something of themselves and were once on welfare.

I imagine that you are the kind of person who probably never ran out on his luck and didn't make any mistakes in your life...well congratulations. Thank God you aren't the one making the decisions on behalf of society because your outlook is skewed and you know nothing.

    Have a nice day. :D

  3. Your eyes WILL stay that way! on Computers Linked to Glaucoma? · · Score: 0

I spend most of my waking life in front of a computer being that I'm a sysadmin and own a web dev company on the side. Anywho, one day while sitting at work my eyes seemed to cross and STAY THAT WAY! I'm not sure if they were croseed or if they were just out of focus, but I can tell you that I could not focus no matter how hard I tried and I really started freaking out. I sat back and tried to relax and I would open them again with no change. I was starting to panic and I finally just shut the door to my office, turned out the lights and tried to relax and doze. When I sort of "woke up" everything was back to normal and I, of course, went right back to staring at the screen for another 4 hours. I never did have it checked out and just chalked it up to strain. Hasn't happened since.

You laugh, but when I was in college for Mechanical Engineering, one of the top professors, and the best one IMHO since I had him for many classes, was going back to school to become an IP lawyer. He recognized the fact that there was big $ to be made there and he was taking advantage of it and thought that he could leverage his excellent technical knowledge in the field of IP law.

So, here we have probably the best math/engineering teacher at the University of Toledo (respected for its engineering program) abandoning his profession to cash in on the assured IP litigation money train. I have a great amount of respect for this man, however I must admit that his choice to join the ranks of IP lawyers saddened me. Perhaps he will be one of the good guys, fighting against ridiculous patents.

If I were Satan, I would simply create some small shiny "toolbar" application with a EULA in which the user agrees to give me their soul. Heck, I might do this anyway just for fun. Then I could put up a page of souls I own with their IP addresses and browsing habits. I could send the history of all the real porn freaks to their church along with proof of soul ownership...just for a few giggles. Any guess on how many souls I could get? Maybe I could trade them in to the real Satan and get a pass to heaven! No more worrying about ultimate judgement WOOHOO!

You are forgetting about small town people. I moved away from the city before realizing that I wouldn't be able to get high speed access for 10 yrs after everyone else. ISDN is too expensive...extra phone line, idsn fee, isp fee, installation fee, isdn terminal adapter....all for a whopping 128k access. Whoopee!! With direcpc or something like it, I can get 400Kbps (download only I admit, upload is by modem, but soon to be rectified) and the overall cost is cheaper than isdn. I can't get DSL or cable modem. I asked my cable company how soon and they said MAYBE in TWO YEARS!!!!!!!! F that. Satellite is my only viable high speed download option.
