You know, with all the money Apple and Microsoft are losing in these patent fights, you would think they would stop doing it. If I was a Microsoft or Nokia shareholder right now, I would be PISSED! This is a blatant and obvious waste of money, when both companies have better things to do with their revenues.

This is only marginally better than the 20,000 or so previous innovative spam ideas, but it's still missing the point of direct advertising on the internet. You're not moving product on the internet unless you're giving people a reason to like you. If they don't like you, they're not going to buy from you. And there's nothing that makes people like you less than spam. Call it social media advertising, call it gods gift to god knows what. It's still an attempt to trick people into buying something they would otherwise have no interest in. And unless it's significantly cheaper than Facebook ads, there's no reason for it to even exist. Or maybe that's the point? In any case, it's dumb, because I said so. And since I'm awesome, you should listen to me. So there.

  6. What's interesting... on Hulu To Require Viewers To Have Cable Subscriptions · · Score: 1

is that there's no mention of the pay service. Honestly, I can see why they would want to force the free users out. But requiring a verification from the paying customers would be enough to kill it. Might be interesting to watch the piracy numbers if they ever did alienate everyone that way. I know I would go back to eztv and others if they ever did. I have no intention of paying for cable service. Roku is all I need, as long as I have netflix, amazon, and hulu+. Kill hulu+, which is the best legit channel for the shows I like, and torrents become the only cost effective alternative. I don't think getting rid of hulu will do anything to change user habits. That boat has sailed. The only question is, are they (the television entertainment industry) really willing to commit suicide in this way? Just seems unnecessary. I'll tell you one thing that would win me back as a cable subscriber: Digital cable with all the trimmings for under $20 a month. I would throw away my Roku in a second. I'm not holding my breath though.

And it's kind of obvious. Doesn't work that well in practice either. Just look at Opera. At one point, Opera was a very promising browser. But they couldn't give away a free one to compete with IE and Netscape, so they loaded theirs with ads... and people went to the ad free browsers. I don't think something as intimate as an operating system would fair much better, if it were loaded with ads. You would find that either people would hack their free copies of it, or people would use other os's.

Unity was the most painful thing I've used in years. On top of an OS where it's simply not possible to get the full value out of my hardware investment... and now they want me to try a new one?

The reason I left Ubuntu was two fold:

    1. I don't like the fact that Canonical makes decisions about my security settings without asking me if I want to change them. And
    2. I think I should have had some say as to whether or not I wanted to use Unity in the first place. This business of upgrading me for the hell of it was sick, wrong, and totally uncalled for. I was a devoted Ubuntu user for years.

Say what you will about Windows. If you conduct an upgrade, your settings and preferences stay at least mostly intact between os versions. And if it's not life threatening, Microsoft will rarely push something to your system or change anything without telling you. And if you don't like it in MS world, you can usually roll back. They've gotten better about this, while Canonical has gotten worse.

It sucks, but it's the only comparison that makes any sense.
