I would suppose that software in binary-only form almost always has some sort of backdoor. Open source doesn't give a 100% guarantee against this, but it facilitates finding these.
Hhm.. have you ever seen those chairs that give you a back massage with a variety of options? I would like to see such features (but programmable and controllable from a computer) in this kind of chair.
Hhm... I liked the good old days when things like generating sounds were cool, when figuring out that 'poking' values to 53280 and 53281 changed border/background colors, etc.
For memory's sake, I have submitted this comment with option 'Plain Old Text'.
Well, I'd still prefer how TeX does it... much more compact. I am somewhat uncomfortable with using a huge number of tags for complex (extensive) formulas.
It seems neat, but there's too much unnecessary plastic involved for me to actually find it practical for my.. uhm.. purposes:-)
I bought a USB webcam a while back (and got it to work on my laptop running Linux). It was pretty fun at first, but once the novelty wears off, it's boring;-)
What is the news exactly? As far as I can tell, there is just a rumor.. maybe created to temporarily boost stock prices;-) It would not surprise me if sega did get acquired at some point. Hey, doesn't MS have an interest?
Has anyone else noticed the _huge_ ad placed on the right to the article (on nytimes.com)? Not only is this extra huge and in flashy colors, but the text also appears word for word, making it highly annoying.
A little ironic that this is placed next to such an article IMO.
I don't think it's possible to outlaw the entire concept of P2P, since there are *many* completely legal uses for it. The only thing that can (will?) be acted against is what is already (more or less) outlawed.
Not the best news to start the day with... considering I use SSH on all of my machines. You can bet quite a few people will be following these developments *grumble*
I think you will need finer resolution to actually be able to distinguish people. Unless you're trying to detect the presence of a (big) car or something. I suppose this also depends on the size of your mom, though.
They seem to be using Limbo as a programming language. Somehow, I don't think YACSPL (yet another client side programming language) is the way to go here.
I think there are at least two peaks: growth and quality and they occur at different times. Most would agree that the quality peak for slashdot has long since passed, while the growth/number of users peak is still to be reached (although I don't have any statistics at hand).
The same goes for the internet... right now you see way too many clones and little really new stuff. The fact that the number of users isn't increasing rapidly doesn't worry me at all.
Increasing bandwidth does make online games like Quake, etc more playable for more people. However, it's kind of "more of the same". No new revolutions yet like email (see other slashdot story).
I agree - their linux distribution isn't that big a deal, so no loss there. However, they do have some nice linux products, so I'm hoping those will continue somehow.
Well, the effort it takes to get to 1GHz is smaller than the effort to get to 2Ghz. Consider the step to 50 or even 100Mhz which I personally found very high at some point. Of course there will be some physical limitations at some point, but apparently the trend will continue for at least a few more years.
It's not difficult at all... in fact, this sort of thing exists already. However, it wouldn't have the same sort of status at the current bugtraq list has.
Exactly. With open source you actually can get BETTER support because there are MANY more entities that can provide support to you than just a single company.

Yeah, a while back, but not too long ago.

My favourite shirts have (well indented) code on them :-)

I totally agree. Even Linus was pretty critical of RH7. Heh.. it's too bad distros like this give Linux a bad name.
Btw, there are various graphics libraries. One I like to use (and also has PHP bindings) can be found at www.boutell.com/gd.

I don't think 15k is a lot for that kind of domain.. esp. one that'll generate visitors on the basis of its name alone.
... any bets?
I wonder how high this will go... my estimate is $25k

I recall DB2 being available already in some form or was that just the announcement a while ago??

Actually, that wasn't my first impression, especially after skimming the description text. Although the 'dept' used may lead to some questions..

Routing would be a pain though... it's already getting increasingly difficult now, image what it's going to be like then.
Sorry to ask this, but.... for those of us not yet familiar with freedb, can anybody tell me what it is and/or post a link?
