  1. Get outside and run! on How Do Geeks Exercise? · · Score: 1

What's the first thing you learned to do after walking, talking, and coding... probably running!

Cheap (you have a pair of shoes that aren't Homer Simpson slippers, right?)

Solitary (you can run down back alleys or in circles around your house/apartment/cubicle)

Still hang onto your geeky side (track your miles with an exercise log and graph and analyze your data)

  2. 8x8 VOIP on VoIP Price War Declared · · Score: 1

8x8 Inc. is another VOIP provider cheaper than both with anytime unlimited LD at $20.55 bottom line per month.

They also offer 911 service that I haven't tried for an extra $3, you just have to make sure you provide your latest address.

I have been pretty happy with it, reception is better than my cell phone. They recently have signed deals to offer hardware with many online retailers, most notably amazon.com and buy.com.

  3. Re:Packet8 information... on Suggestions for a Home VOIP Provider? · · Score: 2, Informative

Packet8 user for about 9 months now, everything has been awesome. I have cable one as my broadband provider (idaho), never had problems with phone quality due to lack of bandwidth or anything connection related. The only problems I have ever had have been caused by my router firewall setup because I was being stupid and blocking incoming packets.

Packet8 has a bunch of the services that I don't use (callerID, call waiting...), because I don't get ANY telemarketing calls, that is the #1 advantage I see... plus it's only $20.55, that's it, it's tough to do much better.

    1. Decided to attend a university for Computer Engineering
    2. Impressed a few professors with good work in class
    3. Got recommended for Windows support position (if there can be such a thing)
    4. Held it for 2 years while learning the system and linux
    5. Applied for linux sysadmin position when it opened up

Hmmm... Maybe working hard in school can pay off.

For me, taking classes at the university has given me a chance to try and prove myself to people. These people can sometimes be important in opening opportunities later in a career.

  5. Re:This Just In: on Review: The Mummy Returns · · Score: 3

While Katz scrutinized every other detail in the movie, I do believe he failed to maybe catch that maybe the movie was meant to be a typical "mummy" movie that's purpose was to poke fun at all the other mummy movies, recursively including itself.

I suppose that Katz's job is to view these movies analyzing every little insignificant detail, but I have a different view.

I go to movies to put my brain on standby for a while and get away from studying and if I can see cool special effects, cool fighting sequences, and some funny situations (considering my maturity level), I leave with the feeling I have been entertained.

IMHO, I can't believe the Rock got paid that much for having one line in the movie and allowing them to use his head on the computer generated scorpion king at the end.

  6. no limit on Computer Science vs. Computer Engineering? · · Score: 1

Just make sure that if you do choose CS or CE, that you don't limit yourself to taking classes because they are on the other side of the fence. I'm talking about those classes that typically only CS or CE would take, the ones that don't technically overlap. Take the classes that you are interested in and don't worry if it takes you a little longer to graduate becuase the broader knowledge you have, the more likely you can be of benefit to a company in a computing-related field.

  7. New meaning of flash memory. on Review: "The Sixth Day" · · Score: 1

Interesting concept, being able to capture our memory on the removeable media they used in the movie. If people were allowed to have this luxury of backing their memory up and would be able to directly handle their memory stick, how long would it be before the computer community would find some way to hack the code format of the stored memory and modify bad memories and add/adjust other memories. I think it would be nice to patch in the memory cartridge of Einstein, Linus, and others, at the beginning of my memory cartridge ( before being born), having not much effect on current life except all their knowledge would be mine. (Insert evil laugh here). This is of course assuming memory storage space is infinite, so as not to overwrite other memory locations. Other questions arise, how big do you think that the memory cartridge would have to be (1 meg for me), since it seemed that only one cartridge was needed for anyone in the movie.
