  1. AOL Responsibility on AOL Germany Found Guilty of Piracy · · Score: 1

Now since when does AOL have juristriction over its members behavior? They should not be held directly responsible for their users and be penalized for it. Punish the people and not the company, like with Napster. I find this pretty scary the German ruling, gives the precedence that AOL can come along and say, "hey, we don't like that you're using on your computer, please leave" and there are no legal ramifications. Of course TOSes are complex and such for that. As for the ruling in other courts, Germany belongs to the EU, so there MIGHT be some ramifications of this ruling on other countries, but I don't know EU law, and at this moment, its very shady. But outside the EU, it shouldn't even be a ripple. Germany is a different country, with its own laws, own customs ("we're civilizing the barabarian east"), and traditions, (see customs). People may look at the ruling, but its precedent can't be used in their countries as basis in court. They can only use their own laws. What Linux must do: First off, most people who use windows, were spoonfed on how to use GUIs and such, they aren't ready for compiling, running, command lines, etc, the stuff in linux. The ignorance is astounding. What must be done: Raise awareness of UNIX. Make Linux more user-friendly while still retaining the interest of the computer literate. Linux needs to come up with a way to be fully compatible with hardware and have software which blows M$'s away. Trump the benefits of Linux. Downgrade Windows. I'm thinking, by 2005, Linux will have a version that ANY dumb ass can use. BUt thats my line of thinking, installing redhat 7 was easy, using it is something else, like my cable modem, still won't work after numerous solutions. See what I mean?

Well, why not? Its a rather good move in response to the X-box. This will give MS the idea of putting XP in X-box..or someone more primitive sort of system inside... Who said open source was bad? This will make MS try to use its own software in its X-box. But then, when people keep seeing blue screens of death...then watch the ps2s fly off the shelves. Not only that, but broadband is become more mainstream as well..in areas that it is available in. That's great that everyone is on the net now...but can they use it? Not only should we help them get access, but spread the knowledge on how to use the internet! There are a lot of AOLers out there and AOL is a terrible first ISP to start out your internet experience. Although there are a lot of people from AOL who might be here and actually realize there is an Internet out there... For example, just last night, my friend who has AOL, didn't even realize what was IE! Another one, practically everyone in my high school had AOL, except me, (I just had to be the exception, I didn't feel very good about a company with such a horrible security record). They had no clue what any outside features of AOL were! Sometimes I had to come over and help their asses out. Lets work on Computer Literacy so people like me can post freely on /. Actually, how do you think the Reformation (which as we know, changed history)started? It took years for a Bible to be written, while a printing press dramatically cut down print time...so Bibles, tracts could be written much quicker, (but still slow compared to our times) As for the insane laws, there are ways to circumvent them enough and we can tie them up in courts for years... This is why we should have elected Gore the Bore, Georgy Jr will just allow the coporations and the government take over the Net which was meant for us all to be used.

I haven't caused a ruckus at school, yet.., but I know for a fact we have a pretty free wheeling press here..in fact the president is paraodied and caricurized almost daily in our newspapers..and it doesn't cause any problems in the school, just venting out our opinion as we are enititled to... I wonder where they got the nerve to even suspend the kid. He has freedom of speech too! Heaven forbid I mock my college president on a website and I get called up to his office and find out I'm expelled. I don't think 10,000 would be enough though for that kind of shit. Its not as if the kid made any threats, he only did a paraody. Granted, if he did it with his school's ISP, (if they have one) then they COULD say something, and only then in the TOS, but that still would be pushing it "I feel an evil presence Could it be... yes, it is! He's a prick, not very intelligent either, revealing his tatics, which any fool with a computer and fancy security programs can do..it doesn't take a script kiddie to do that shit. The article, my God, what a bunch of bullshit, as someone already dissected it for our enjoyment. Unfortunately, we'll be seeing more of these Internet Cops out there. But, you can't stop file-sharing on the net, there's no way, Freenet, IRC, and email are the backbone to file-sharing after you remove the Napster-like services and web sites. I'm not going to go into the legality of the files and such, but I find it distrubing someone is out there thinking he can just go along and bust people....a online dective and police officer.... Btw, want to find a way to take this guy down in court? Group together and fund yourself for a lawyer. I'm sure he's going to try to bust 100 people, its 1,000 apiece for one trial which would bust his "power" Slashdot: The real Computer Haven MSDN: Microsoft's wannabe Slashdot
