I just canceled my DSL with Earthlink this week. In the 9 months that I have had DSL, it has gone out 3 times for various reasons including once cutt off by ATT because they didnt know what the line was for! (The bell tech guy needed some extra wire for a phone line so he decided to cut my DSL line all up for spare parts) Because so many companies are involved with the delivery of the service (earthlink, covad, ATT) it is simply a nightmere to manage, and none of the companies wants to take responsibility for all the communication errors. I will soon be getting a cable modem which will hopefully alleviate the problem. In addidtion to the down time of my internet connection, the bungeled serivce cost me time from work to wait for techs ("they will be there between 8:00am and 1:00pm!!" only never to show...), hours on hold, and loss of hair.
OH Im sorry guess you LIKE paying 20$ for your CDs! Lets just bend over and let the RIAA have its way with the consumers!! If CDs were 8-10 $ Id be happy to buy them. If mp3s were.25-.75 ea I would be happy to buy them. But its not. So there is available technology to say "screw the middle man, im goin to the source". You do the math smart guy.
I agree with so many of the things that Mr. Miller has to say. And the bottom line is that its all about the money- I have a MAC and I have linux and I have Windows. What I love is internet explorer and Windows Office. They are far superior to any other apps like them that I have seen. My problem? I cant AFFORD 500$ for MS office! If this was 100$ I could do it and feel good about it. Programmers deserve to be paid for their work too and I think that the linux community forgets this from time to time. The real questions is "how much"? If I (and others) dont want to pay 500$ for decent software what must we do? Probably cut the coders salaries and stop lining everyones pockets with gold. Will this happen? Probably not. But the fact of the matter is I have a damn hard time sharing files with my iBook (appleworks) to Windows (everyone else) users.
All your.docs are belong to us.
I dont mind buying CDs- because lets face it thats what its all about. What i DO mind is paying 20$ for a CD. If the RIAA would simply comprimise and sell CDs for say 7 or 8 $ then I would happily pay for my music. I think that we as Geeks sometimes go overboard about "free information". Do you pay for your playstation games?
CDDB usage is just napsters next step towards pacifying the RIAA- everyone knows that this wont stop people from rearanging song names etc. This will just go back and forth until SOMEONE decides to pay up- either the RIAA or the users!
I would like to see this televised. Its cool that we as geeks can appreciate it, but nothing will be done to STOP these companies until we bring it before the regular joe kinda guy. All joe knows is that windows XP will make his life easier. Does he know about SAP or what it does to his mp3 collection?? Does he understand the real draconian measures being taken by MS, NSA and others?
You do this in linux with your firewall (ipchains rules. Start with a DENY policy "ipchains -P input DENY" then you have to turn everything you want on, like the loopback interface with the -A flag) and you could also use/etc/hosts.deny.
NT? never used it....
mount /mnt/floppy ;)
Thats it. Im joining the army.
