I think that the statistic would be a bit different if we were not campaigning against one of the poorest and technology deprived nations in the world...
At some point....we will have to learn to live with the fact that there will be many (at least more than 2) organazations that can kill millions of people anywhere at anytime. The technology is within grasp and so we know that if it is within grasp we will grab it. The delema will not be "how do avoid this technology getting into the wrong hands" it will be "how do we as humans overcome our instinct to kill each other and assert control over one another?"
You are right about that, the only way I have seen to avoid that is to buy an Apple or to have a custom computer built by a shop or a friend. This has never been a problem for me though because I am a geek. I have submitted a question though to CompUSA (one of the better chains in my opinion) to see if they have any computers with no OS preloaded.
Doesnt matter where you buy your hardware, you can put whatever software you want on it. Its up to you. The fact that an OS comes pre-installed is a convenience, not a requirement. I guess I am from the old camp of "computers arent toasters".
You might not be interested, but here is an awesome resource on the GIMP. It is called Grokking the GIMP GIMP made me a little nervous at first, but now I'm slapping my friends faces on pr0n stars bodies in no time!!
I do not think MS is a monopoly as of right now. Really. You have a choice: you can use linux to run your apps. You can use StarOffice to open word docs. You can play your CDs. But in the future, when all DVD, CDs and video games REQUIRE a MS OS (with incorporated DRM), whether it is computer based or homestation based, will that be a monopoly? When I can still USE linux, but no content is available to me? I do not really blame MS for their terible business practices. They really only have one strategy: make money. They have never been punished, so how are they supposed to learn? It is somewhat our responsibility to get on the legal process bandwagon and try to let our government know that we cannot accept this.
In an effort to get off my lazy duff and write correspondance, how can I figure out who voted for this crazy piece of crap? I dont wanna go off on my congressman if he did the right thing and voted no. ya know?
that wouldnt work because those companies you mentioned would lobby to shoot down our various gpl licenses. I dont think they can withstand the pressure a full bear RIAA/WALMART/MPAA/TIMEWARNER lawsuit would bring. The bottom line lies in the hands of the government, and if they are in bed with those mentioned above you cant win.
at some point, will windows become like Kleenex? I call all tissues kleenex, regardless of brand. On the other hand, maybe I should head out and TM:

I wonder if it is illegal to plot to buy and return something? If not should we somehow organaize via the web a sort of "CD purchase and return day" (through boards or webpage) using the list of copy protected CDs. After this we can track progress of other returns because it will certainly take more than one day of returns for the company to notice or care. It takes a big misquito to make the giant even swat at it.
I actually did this. The red carpet software looks great on the surface. Then you use it. It seemed and looked beautiful. It even made a pretty sound when it was done downloading compiling and installing evo. Then I tried to run evo and it just kind of crashed. I love the idea of this software, but my actual ability to install and configure software on linux has been shady to say the least. (Which is fine if you are a linux HaX0r, but isnt the whole point of making software like redcarpet so that you dont have to be?)
I guess I could see this working as when RIAA starts whatever monopoly online music service. The software you would have to download to listen to RIAA approved licensed music would search your hard drive for mp3s and delete them. It would all be in the license of course. You DO read your licenses?
From what I have seen, iTunes is by far the most superior audio program. The playlists are not only easy to use, but keeps track of your music more efficiently and you can query easily too. I would like to see THAT ported to linux and windows...but it wont happen, so I use sonique...(deprecated, but whatever it works)
Johnny American: "Im scared!"
US Govmt: "Here, hold this card - it says you're american!"
Johnny: "Will this make me safe, and allow me to retain my illusions of life so that I can go on with my meaningless existance?"
US Govmt: "Of course!"
Johnny: "Schweet. Safety."
I was gonna play some chess, but then I got high,

For some reason I could see this becoming "Circumvention" software and being banned by networks such as MS "Passport" etc. i.e if you want to be a part of the network and reap the rewards, you have to deal with the ads...
(bend over...)
have you tired hooking up your playstation 2 to the TV through the VCR and play a DVD? It doesnt work, it looks like chanel 53 pR0n that you didnt pay for....pisses me off to no end. Not that that is the exact same thing, but you get my point.
OOPS! I guess I accidently enocded all of my britney spears songs as TOOL songs. Oh well, its only 1.00 each to try again.....just dont download from brintneylvr45.

Well, this is a sigh of relief for the folks over at kurzweil's website (kurzweilai.net) Knowing you are going to live for ever must be a huge burden.
