  1. Decoding Speed? on ExtremeTech Wages War of the Codecs · · Score: 2, Insightful

What I find interesting is the lack of information on how much processing power is needed to decode the content. For instance, I have some QT-Sorrenson-3 video that looks incredible, but requires too much heft to decode on my lowly iBook/500MHz. The MPEG-4 version of the file does not look as good, but the video DOES at least play.

I think it is VERY important to understand the target platform where the content is to be decoded. If it's set-top box, PDA, or mobile phone, then I'd imagine MPEG-4 would be more appropriate (it's also great at streaming). QT-Sorrenson-3 is more targeted towards the desktop.

John Draper (aka captain crunch) visited UIUC a few years ago. I hung out with him at a party and he began telling us about how the CrunchBox could be configured to launch counter attacks. I'm not sure it it's available in the present configuration - but it was definitely under consideration at one time.

  3. Fostering Competition on 11 Digit Dialing Comes Home to New York · · Score: 1

As far as I can tell, this move was made to level the playing field between the bells and new start up local carriers. My father has worked in the telcom sector for some time now, and this is how he explained it to me:

When cell phone and pagers got popular, we started running out of numbers, despite our population grouth estimates. But that was okay, because we could put cell phones and pagers on a seperate overlapping area code. Now small start-up phone companies want to provide local service. They can buy blocks in the new overlaping area code. But, here's the catch. If you want service from someone other than Ameritech (now SBC), you are going to have to get a number in this new overlaping area code. So, you're going to need to dial 11 numbers to get your friends in the old area code. It's an added barrier to entry when new customers will have to suffer an extra 4 digit burden. So, the FCC decided that in order to level the playing field, all people in areas with overlaping area codes should dial 11 digits.

If this is indeed the case, I can understand why people are getting upset. We are sacfificing the short term convience of dialing 7 numbers for the hope that in the end better competition will help consumers.

Not fair? As my father says "Life's not fair. Get over it."

In case you were wondering, here is the explicit ASP error:

    "Server Error in '/' Application.

    Runtime Error

Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine. ..."

More evidence that it's a security problem and not scheduled downtime. Security problems with IIS? I've never heard of such a thing!

But then again, downtime like this is nothing new:

It seems that www.gotdotnet.com is down for the count. I loaded the page and received a nice ASP error. Now, http seems to be totally down (tested from home and work).

Ahh, the joys of running IIS 5.0

But, wait! The plot thickens. A ping from a redhat box within the uiuc.edu network reveals:

    [root@redhatbox root]$ ping www.gotdotnet.com
    PING gotdotnet.com (207.46.228.80) from 130.126.xxx.xx : 56(84) bytes of data.

Before you run out and try to buy one of these puppies, take a moment to realize that stereo differentiation is just one cue used for depth perception. One of the strongest cues is actually motion parallax. Try closing one eye, then swaying your head from side to side. You can tell which objects are closer to you by their apparent motion.

In order to get some really believable 3D perception out if this monitor, you are going to need some way of tracking head position. So, if you want non-invasive 3D in the future, be prepared to have a camera pointed at your head, and another computer chomping the video stream to compute your point of gaze.

Nothing is as simple as it seems.
