    • Enron fraud
    • Wal-Mart union busting

the LISA gravitational wave antenna: postponed indefinitely

the Explorer program, which launches small, often university-designed missions like WMAP (cosmic microwave background), HETE (gamma-ray bursts), and SWIFT (just launched!). Funding for future missions is on hold.

I used to commute on an electric-assisted bike. I'd use the motor for a burst of acceleration out of stoplights, or up short hills. My legs did most of the work overall, but with the quick acceleration I could keep up with city traffic. I could take up a lane and behave more or less like a car.

    It was great.

There is at least one major astrophysics experiment planned for ISS: the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a huge particle-physics detector with a superconducting magnet. It will sit on the truss, facing out into space, and measure cosmic rays. From anomalies in high-energy particle and antiparticle spectra, we can learn about dark matter, antimatter, and other topics. Launch in 2007. 13 nation/55 university/488 physicist collaboration. Check it out!
