Why would Microsoft, who has a failing ISP, want to buy AOL, who is a failing ISP?
Actually MSN was profitable last year. So I fail to see where you are going calling it a failing ISP.
And AOL owns Nullsoft. Assuming that is part of the Aquisition, it would be another interesting sping.
Now that is something that had not come to my mind. I very much doubt that the EU would allow that. On the other hand, it would be nice if winamp replaced windows media player. Not going to happen, but we can wish.
"and just about everything you'd expect to be able to do from a Windows machine, except make the battery last."
Sounds like you basically answered your own question. Use the best tool for the job. If windows allows you to do all that AND make the battery last - then maybe you should just use windows.
One think I used to enjoy taking part in is TopCoder. They hold small online coding competitions that only take about an hour and a half to take part in - and are quite a lot of fun. Plus they are held about once a week. So you dont have to worry about missing one because there will always be another one just around the corner.
What about Microsoft. They release a whole slew of free software. For instance there is a version of Windows Media player for Windows, Mac OS, and even Solaris.... I'd say that all these other companies release their free software for the same reasons that Microsoft releases its free software. To make money in some way.
the source code available to themselves for years but still managed to neither find nor fix these same obvious problems
All of the exploits that have been appearing out of the source code leak had all been fixed prior to the leak. At least all of the ones that I have heard about. This includes the one that was posted here on/.
I know I've seen plenty of obvious open source exploits that had been around for years too. So don't give me that crap about open source projects being imunne to stupid errors.
The fact of the matter is that these are very large projects. No one is going to argue that windows isn't a large project. And with any large project there are ALWAYS going to be bugs. It is inherent in software engineering.
1. Get the average users hooked on what appears to be an amazing convenience. I type an email in Outlook or Messenger asking Suzy the red headed club foot in accounting if she would like to meet me for coffe after work. Office hits MSN search and pulls up the Coffee keyword, sees Starbuck's has paid it's bill this month and embeds a coupon and a map to this closest Starbucks in your email with one click. Only those who can afford to pay MSN search rates will be able to play.
My questions to you: Is this really all that bad? So maybe you were planning to go to a starbucks anyway. Hey, maybe they just pointed out a closer starbucks that you hadn't thought of. And is a coupon for coffee a bad thing to get just before you go out for coffee?

Have you considered running WinXP instead of Win98. I think you will find that in the last 5 years there have been signifigant improvments to windows.
No-one is going to disagree that Win9x was a horrible OS. But WinXP is a whole lot better. (Once you turn off the horrible theming, and make it look normal again)
Its good to know that when using these linux distributions that your OS will be supported and maintained for years to come.
Unlike some OSs like Windows which only provide support for 3-6 years
How long was RH9 supported for? Released March 03, killed April 04. Wow, a whole year. I'd hate to have to reinstall the OS on all my companies workstations that often.
"Of course no pop-up blocker, and then the plug-in community seems all but invisible"
There have been tons of plugins for IE to block popups for ages. Google being an obvious although recent one. The only reason that people dont know about them is that they arn't all in one obvious place like the mozilla / firebird ones. But they certainly exist.
Frankly, my IE has had most of the features that mozilla etc zeolots have been praising this whole time. I have mouse gestures, tabbed browsing and popup blockers. Sure I need to use plugins to do all that. But then you have to in mozilla too.
Besides do you really think that IE having a popup blocker is going to help any. In fact for those of us who are already blocking popups it may be a bad thing. The advertising agencies are soon going to realise that popups are less effective and we will have more of those popup layers over the webpage. But it makes sense for MS to release it if only to shut up the mozzila fanatics who think they have ads all worked out. I dont think it will in any way help the end users.
And just what do these childish OS hackers expect to gain from this? It is not like it is going to change anything. Yes they are suing people using Linux. But thats one of the problems with open source. If there is a legal issue with the code then its your problem. That is one of the great things about microsoft. At least when you are using their software, you know that you will have microsofts army of lawers to defend any legal issues there may be with the code.
Which is cheaper, buying windows, or spending months in trial?
I have this problem too. But I suspect it is because my proxy bangs on the server much more often than every 30mins. But thats what happens when you work at a very large company.
I can assure you that if linux magically took over 90% of the desktop tomorrow that there would be tons of misconfigured SSH daemons and apache running.
And if I wanted to write a virus, I would write one for windows. Not because it would be easier, but because well whats the point of writing one for linux. First there are not enough computers running linux to make it worth while. And Second, the only people that can use linux are computer savy people that would know how to detect and fix a virus. Or they have someone who setup their computer for them who is computer savy. Where as the majority of computer users dont even know that you should not run executable mail attachments.
Sure some of the problems are MS's fault. But many of them are stupid users. Linux for the most part hasn't had to deal with them yet. But maybe this is something to do with the fact that they wouldn't be able to do anything in linux. Let alone know how to maintain basic security. (Yes it doesn't matter how secure your system is if the users will run anything you give them).
My understanding of it is that Sparkle is just a development tool, to build winFX applications. The "flash-killer" is winFX, not sparkle. I've heard winFX called many things. Supposedly its going to kill flash, pdf, html, win32 and a couple of other things I've forgot.
Its not out to kill anything. Its just updating the current outdated win32 interface to last the next 10 or 20 years. Of course, from what I have seen, it does seem possible that it will make several of those technologies seem out of date. They just have to keep up.
I would say that not updating IE is part of a more board plan. MS is placing a huge bet on their next wave, longhorn being the base of this wave. Along with longhorn, they will release a new much updated, longhorn specific versions of most of their software, office and IE included. The idea I assume being to create a reason to upgrade to the new OS. Cause lets face it, MS's biggest competition right now is themselves. There are still a rediculous number of computers running Windows 9x.
Having run various versions of longhorn. I can tell you that the version of IE in longhorn, does have popup blocking for instance.
I believe that the next MS wave will be worth seeing. On the other hand, its going to be a while. (late 2005 at the earliest)
When I saw this post, I was all excited. I thought I was going to see a bunch of questions like the ones I got at my microsoft interviews.
First, I was a little surprised when they wern't all cs riddles. I guess I'd been a little hasty, slashdot isn't a programming site. I saw the link marked Microsoft,.. "Oh Goodie!". But I guess these are the questions that the non-programmers get. =/
So I headed over to the CS riddles. Started reading over them.. "Too easy"... "Done"... "yeah, yeah, easy".. Except for a couple that he doesn't have the solution to, so who knows if they are really possible.
So I think about trying to post the riddles I got here. But really most of them are interactive, and you can't really put them up all at once without giving it away. Things like, given this kind of data, sort it. Now optimize the space needed.... down to using a single bit for each element. Now use half that memory. Now a quarter. Yeah, it was great fun. I really enjoyed their interviews. Didn't take the job tho... turned those suckers down =P
One for the road:
You have a list of numbers. You have to find the largest sum of a continious subset of those numbers.
Example: 1 -3 1 4 -2 4 -6 answer would be 7
in O(n) time, constant space... but just telling you that makes it much easier.
Here at UCI, we get pepsi in the dorm food places. But then, we have no coke. But you know, thats just like anywhere you eat. How many places do you know that offer coke and pepsi?
Are they not going after leonardo.com, leonardo.net or leonardo.co.uk? These sites should look at what has happened to etoy.com and shudder. But I notice that Yahoo finds 190 hits with a search of leonardo... and "the bad guys" do not appear to be in the top 30 or so. Altavisa found over 400,000. These guys have their work cut out for them if they are going to ga after the lot. This is too silly for words. The scary bit is that they found some cops dumb enough to do anything other than laugh.
Why would Microsoft, who has a failing ISP, want to buy AOL, who is a failing ISP?
