There are no 60 storey buildings in London or anywhere else in the United Kingdom. The Tallest building in the UK is the Canary Wharf Tower in East London which has 50 floors. Sorry to inject a few facts into this pointless discussion.
American parents are not doing a very good job of bringing up their children, perhaps this software can do a better job !!
Seriously though, the problem with American society today is that everyone is a victim, everyone denies personal responsibility, the ex-president openly committed adultery, the porno business is our second largest industry (beaten only by our arms industry), religion and duty have been totally forgotten and our main passtime these days is watching TV which pours out an endless stream of filth like having an open sewer in your living room.
Me and my wife decided to get out of the USA while we still could. Fortunately I have dual British/US citizenship so it was very easy for me to simply pack up and go. And I must say that looking back at events since I left (Columbine, rodney king, Clinton, etc) I am glad I left that country. It is not the America of my parent's day. It has become a hell-hole of extreme wealth vs extreme poverty, racism run riot, uncontrolled litigation, and virtually no freedom whatsoever.
For me it was emigrate or join the militias. I think I made the right decision. Today, I get free healthcare, there are no guns on the streets and me and my children can sleep safely at night without any of the paranoia that an alert US citizen must feel.
I would urge any of you out there with dual nationality to leave the USA while you still can !

For a while I was beginning to think I would never be able to reconcile the need to run quality robust software, with the requirement to see the source code to ensure it wasn't infected with trojans, backdoors and virii. This new initiative from Microsoft while not being as comrehensive as I'd like, is (in time honoured Microsoft tradition) "good enough".
Hell, how many people actually want the source code because they are going to actually compile it ? Not many i'd guess. But plenty of people want the source as a kind of comfort factor. I am one of those people. I could not give a flying fuck about whether it is GPL, LGPL, BSD or whatever (they differ only in technicalities) I just want to know that my software is safe and will not allow me to be penetrated via the backdoor with a trojan.
Anyway, now Microsoft have gone "open source" do we actually need Linux any more ? I mean, sure Windoze costs $$S, but then so does Red$Hat these days...
It is clear that the average 12-year old kid playing games does not care about open source. In fact, its fair to say that Open Source as a model simply fails where games are concerned. The amount of investment required to produce a top quality video game is now about the same as to produce a Hollywood movie.
The Open Source model could work where plug-ins and levels and other non-essential parts of the game are concerned, but a top quality 3D engine by its very nature must remain propreitory.
Finally, it is abundantly clear that the BSD license would be the only sensible licence to consider for games, since if the game was released under the GPL, nobody could ever make any money out of it due to Stallman's Communism.
As anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of physics will tell you, it is simply impossible to have a current flowing where there is no conductivity. That's the whole point of electricity. In order for this machine to compute anything, there will need to be a power supply of some sort. Probably it won't need to be the whopping 300W that modern day Athlons require, but is is obvious that you cannot power even a quantum CPU off thin air.
The quality of the stories on Slashdot really sucks these days. Combine that with a frightening lack of basic physics knowledge, and you have a recipie for disaster.
I expect the next story on slashdot will be the news that someone has invented a perpetual motion machine !!!:-)
Has it occurred to you that you are pitching yourselves as a premium solution where the customer wants an 'economy' solution ? Are you telling me you never misconfigured anything ? Are you telling me that the OS you use has no exploits ?
It really does sound like sour grapes. Think of it as a learning experience about the quality that the marketplace demands. Bill Gates is famous for only delivering the absolute minimum quality that the customer will accept.
It sounds like you guys should do more quantity of work, with less of the quality. After all, in 3 years time, everyone will be working somewhere else, and noone will care.
It may be thousands of years old, but it has stood the test of time. It has no annoying banner ads and very little porn to distract you from what you were actually searching for. What is the name of this search engine ?
The Holy Bible.
No matter what subject you are interested in, the Holy Bible has something to say. From Geekiness, to Installing Linux, to how to get a date, to what to eat. Its all in there. I realise I will be marked as flamebait by the anti-religious slashdot zealots but if just one person is saved my my advice it will have been worth all the negative moderation in the world.
I found it funny too. But then I posted it - anyone who actually read the posting would realise it is a blatantly obvious troll. But that never stops people from replying. They cannot seem to stop themselves.
Thats pretty cool. I guess we can forgive the govt spending our tax $$s when the results are as practical as this. If only all govt sponsored projects could produce such immediate practical results. I would have so much less of a problem with NASA if their work led to practial solutions not pie-in-the-sky 'future benefits'.
It would certainly give my GeForce2 a run for its money.

Perhaps God knows something we mere humans do not ? Had that thought ever occured to you ? That there is a divine being out there who cares about your mortal soul and shudders at the thought of you engaging in some hot 'man-on-man' loving followed by a lenght watersports and fisting session down at your local gay disco ?
You could argue that God is a killjoy. You could argue that he is is discriminatory. However, you cannot argue with the word of God as written in the Holy Bible, since BY DEFINITION it is true.
This person appears to be, but I'd like to point out that there are people out there that believe in the Bible, and in Christ, that also believe in evolution and science. We're even open and affirming
to gay & lesbian people, recognizing that its not a 'choice', etc.
Then it is quite clear that your definition of Christianity is so loose as to be almost meaningless. The Bible lays down some very specific rules, especially on 'science' and other supersticious belief systems (e.g. astronomy)
'thou shalt have no other God but me'. - this commandment (the fundamental building block of Christianity) makes it clear in no uncertain terms that science is NOT to be worshipped.
Anyway, you seem to think I am a Christian. Nothing could be further from the truth. I do not see the reason to cling to any belief system for very long. Scientists are nothing more than the old alchemists of 16th Century England, but this time instead of turning base metal into gold, they are pretending to know about the origins of Man. Face facts, Science knows nothing, but its arrogance is unbounded. You only have to look at the pollution caused by motor vehicles, or the damage done to the Amazon rain forests to see this.
I'm sad to say that it is our country (America) which leads this field. (USA #1 as usual!!).
Without condoning the spammers (I think they are scum) I cannot help thinking that 12 months jail for something as trivial as sending an email is a bit excessive.
Surely it is up to the recipient of mail to simply junk that which he/she does not wish to read.
In my experience, you only get spam mail if you have registered with some website or other, which is asking for trouble really.
Anyway, who decides what is and is not spam ? It seems very subjective. I don't think this new bill is constitutional either, since it clearly abridges my rights to freedom of speech. Just because you don't like what I am saying does not mean I cannot say it. Or does it ?
The problem with CS is that there really is no such thing as computer 'Science'. It is just the name given to make it look as if there is some academic disipline in the subject. In fact, there is none. Although I hate Microsoft, I have attended some MCSE instruction courses. What they taught me there in 5 days was worth far more than anything my CS professors ever taught me.
Also, most CS courses seem to have a Unix bias. Now I am all in favor of unix (especially the free varieties), but I have to wonder if Unix is relavent for the vast majority of CS students who will end up writing applets or PHP or perl to run on W2K servers.

Freedom like anything can be harmful if you have too much of it. The USA recognizes this, which is why we have laws about what we are not allowed to do. You are not free to buy guns if you are mentally unstable. You are not free to kill someone with whom you disagree, etc etc.
Problem is, there are no laws legislating for morality In fact, our constitution expressly forbids us to respect any religion.
While not a bible-bashing fundamentalist, I can still see how America would be a much better place if all the less intelligent people (not slashdot readers, but the trailer trash you see on Springer) were forced to conform to a moral code (the bible is as good as any for want of a better choice).
This would quickly change our society from a 'me-first' dollar-driven one, into something far more civilised where what you are like as a person is more important than whether you have the latest 1.5GHz Pentium 4 or what car you drive.
Robin Hood is a historic figure, however he was not the hero most people believe. He was in fact leader of the English equivalent of a Militia. His band of criminals were basically a group of tax-avoiding hoodlums similar to the Mob in the USA. So point one:
Robin Hood was a criminal, and is not a role model.
Secondly. Vietnam era activism was arguably a morally valid pursuit. Real people were being murdered for no crime other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. McDonald's has not set fire to any villages recently, and Nike is not in the habit of using Napalm on its consumers. I fail to see any parallelism between globalization and war atrocities. Most of these 'activists' are simply spoiled college brats with too much time and energy on their hands, having a tantrum before they settle down to their cosy middle-class existance.
Thirdly defacing a web site is not 'hacking'. It requires almost zero skill, and any reasonably competent CS undergrad could do it with no trouble at all. These people are talented. But they are not hackers. The true hackers are people like Linus, RMS, Alan Cox, Stroustrup, Kernihan, Richie, Pike, Van Jacobsen, Stevens, etc etc. It is the ultimate INSULT that a nerd site like slashdot is unable to make the distinction.
Defacers are CRACKERS NOT HACKERS. Is this clear enough for you ?

It really is pointless. Why not simply wait a few months for Moore's law to kick in, and then you can get the same speed, but legitimately, and with the manufacturer's blessing. All it takes is a bit of patience.
What exactly is 'silly' about legal protection ? - I'm sorry but I fail to understand.

How do they know they are not sending Earth diseases out into space to decimate the population of any extra-terrestrial civilization which is unlucky enough to encounter it ?
NASA is just boys and their toys. It is time we taxpayers took those toys away. Sure they will squeal like pigs at the idea, but the will of the people must prevail.
