  1. Corn oil engine on Why Do We Still Use Gasoline? · · Score: 1

It seems that I remember seeing a corn oil powered car on that old Discovery Channel show with all the cool inventions. Some guy retrofitted his Rabbit to handle it, and got about 10 miles to the gallon. Considering the cost of corn oil is low now, and a renewable source we can produce right here in the states, it seems like a cool idea. Plus, how else could you refuel at a grocery store? "Fill 'er up, and how about a dozen eggs?"

Basically, its a lot easier for law enforcement agents to go after the source than every personal infringer, sorta like Napster. Sue 50 million users(slightly exaggerated) or 1 company?

of course, it doesnt work, and people go elsewhere, so then said agents request a ban like this one...

  4. M$ will never be able to play THAT nicely on The X-Box: An Emulator's Dream Platform? · · Score: 1

The major hurdle I see is that the large majority of the consoles that enough people want to see emulated to come close to making a profit are platforms owned by companies microsoft plans to compete with(or not compete... as the lawsuit alledged :) ). Both sega and nintendo have their own hardware, and are networked, making an emulation by subscription service just as feasible on star cube (dolphin) or psx 2 or DC. As for stand alone emulaters like bleem, from a copyright standpoint, only CD systems are eligible, since the system doent read carts, and putting cartridge ROM images out on CD would be illegal without prior consent. Basically, I expect to see MAME and a c64 emulater, maybe, on XBox. As for snes emulation, that would detract from the profitablility of the Gameboy Advanced, which is nearly completely designed for snes ports, much like the Gameboy Color did for NES. And I believe someone posted that Sega already has emulation thru subscription on the DC. In a perfect world, XBox would have a MSX emulater, especially since microsoft had a hand in its making, complete with a metal gear 2 in english...

  5. Re:This is important on Saving Our Video Game Heritage · · Score: 1

Yea, theres a couple of ripped music players around, NSFs(nes sound format) SID(c64 music), and my favorite SPCs (snes music). www.zophar.net has a link on there somewhere for these, and probably more. i know for sure that nsf and spc have winamp plugins. The best music around has to be castevania and mega man, on NES. As for snes, cant go wrong with square stuff.

Well, seeing as how the title of the book its based on is "Do androids dream of electric sheep?", the unicorn dream helps point the viewer in the proper direction. Perhaps Ridley thought to answer the question like, "No, they dream about unicorns."

  7. PSX games on Software Packaging And The Environment? · · Score: 1

A lot of playstation games come to mind, being practically just the jewel case, as being "slim" packaging. Nintendo, on the other hand, isn't on the side of slimming down. They do use recycled paper, but not using it at all was certainly objectable to their marketing department. Guess it all comes down to profitability. On another note, I would think software without a physical medium of distrobution (ala shareware/freeware) greatly cuts down packaging.

  8. Islands in the Net on Ask Havenco's CTO Anything You'd Like · · Score: 1

It seems to me that several slashdotters find coincidences with Cryptonomicon, as do I, but I was wondering more if anyone there had read Bruce Sterling's "Islands in the Net." In the book the three data havens aren't just storage locations, but they also create their own huge databases from sources like their own customer's data, and charge people/companies for access to their databases. Are you planning to create such a database and offer such a service?

The Dev studio will not be upgraded to GBA most likely, due to lack of infomation on the propriety console. The current version is based on information that has been published ( such as the fact that it uses a Z80 CPU),leaked(like the 2-Player .pdf), or reverse engineered. And it is very unlikely that the Cygnus kit will be released to anyone other than liscenced developers. Getting liscenced isnt easy, according to some open letter from the big N. Basically, they usually want people with experience in game development, have the proper office space, are willing to buy their expensive hardware emulaters. Fortunately for gameboy enthusiasts, there are alternatives to the $10k nintendo hardware. One such is at http://www.bung.com.hk (not bunk.com.hk as someone else mentioned)

  10. Marketing at its worst. on eToys Drops Lawsuit Against eToy · · Score: 1

With the recent slew of .com etailiors and a whole new "electronic" jargon vocabulary, many such retailers are looking for ways to get people's attention. A few days after the lawsuit got media attention from Wired, slashdot, and many other sites, I thought to myself, I bet they drop the suit after Christmas is over. And low and behold, the stunt is shown for what it is, a stupid marketing stunt at the expense of some unlucky artists. Whats worse is it works. I'm sure many people know of eToys.com, and theres probably a few people who know and have purchased from them, thanks to a little manipulation of mass media. This is the one major flaw of Corporate America, valuing money over ethical responsability.

  11. Community maintained blocklist on Cookies, Ad Banners, and Privacy · · Score: 3
There is a community maintained Junkbuster blocklist here. (The blocklist is the list of regular expressions for all blocked site's banner ads). Put a wget command into your cron and you won't need to worry about updating your blockfile when banner ads are created or changed.

There is also a nice URL to verify that you are runing the proxy correctly, and displays the loaded blocklist and configuration. It works great as a home page.

I've been using this setup for quite a long time and I am very happy with the results. The browsing time is greatly increased and without the clutter.

Thats over a full days work of downtime!

Now, if a reboot takes about 3 minutes, thats a stellar 175 reboots per year!

Ok, I can see NT having 99.9% uptime.
