  1. Re:Interesting on Air Force One Flyby Causes Brief Panic In NYC · · Score: 1

Biggest problem with the parachute solution is the user. Normal people don't know which side of the building it would be better to jump from given the wind, don't known how to deal with deployment issues, don't know to see and avoid obstacles like wires between buildings etc, don't know how to steer, don't know how to land. It would be broken legs, arms, backs and heads as well as a proportion of dead bodies and they would be scattered all around the buildings. Then there would be the interesting winds setup be buildings on fire, just to make things interesting.

  2. Re:A sensible use senario ... on IDE to SCSI Converters? · · Score: 1

I've seen these before, but haven't seen enough to convince met that it is useful.

Things they I think would be good are tagged command queueing, getting an IRQ or two back from my ide controllers, especially when I am already using a SCSI controller.

I'm not sure whether SCSI bus contention will be better or worse than IDE master/slave contention when I want to do raid 0+1 over 4 drives.

And then there is the whole Serial ATA thing, coming soon to a store near me.

If I'd seen these converters a few years ago, and they were a reasonable price, then they would have been worth the investment. Now SATA is added to the mix.

  3. IDE/SCSI drive adapter; SCSIDE on Serial ATA vs. SCSI - Will it Compete? · · Score: 1
I've been trawling the web recently and came across an circuit board that has an IDE plug and a SCSI socket. Two variants, Ultra or UltraWide. SCSIDE

Still a little expensive at US$50-$75, but better than paying full price for SCSI drive prices. Some nice benchmarks would be nice, then I just need to convince myself that I need 4xUW converters and a dual channel UW SCSI controller.

  4. cheap mechanical switch on Keyboard Video Mouse (KVM) Switches · · Score: 1

I've got a cheap mechanical 4 port switch setup next to my monitor.

Cost about AUD 150 / USD 100 to setup including cables about a year ago, probably cheaper now. Good video cables are important for the connections you care about. I have 2 good and 2 cheap.

Under windows and linux console mode I usually don't have problems switching quickly, however under Linux when using X, I must switch to console mode to switching connections otherwise the mouse locks up. I guess this means the mouse needs resetting after switching, and maybe windows does it automatically.
