You clearly are not a gamer. No laptop has good enough videocard or fast enough processor for these hyper-deadly fraggers. Right now it's 1.2GHz Athlon + Geforce 2 GTS 'minimum' for serious gaming.

Sorry, laptops just suck for gaming... besides their displays are too slow for fast FPS action - everything just gets blurry.

  2. And exactly why would this interest the masses? on Tiny, Secure Music/Data CDs Due in the Fall · · Score: 2
People moved from tapes to CD because of the sound quality and ease of use (no rewinding etc) and vinyl 'phased out' since it was just too large and unwieldy to use. There is nothing in this DataPlay system that offers anything new to joe.random massmarket user. Their first question will be: Why should I buy yet ANOTHER CD-player?

So while music media moguls would love to replace all the CD players in the world with their protected proprietary system, it's simply not going to happen. This is just another MiniDisc in the making. Now this MIGHT work as a media for PDA applications and data, but for music, we have our CD's and we have our MP3s. DataPlay offers no benefits for the end user compared to these.

  3. Man, this is some _serious_ crap on Copy Protection Galore · · Score: 1
I actually browsed thru the agreement they submitted to FCC.

Man, it has some scary shit in it. They seem to have learned something from the DVD fiasco, and are making sure anyone who is manufacturing these consumer devices actually protect their stuff. No jumpers, traces, eproms.. everything 'easily' hackable is a big no-no. This means your Friendly Modchip Maker may be in trouble.

In my opinion this kind of bullshit has to be killed by FCC and/or courts. Hollywood is trying to waltz in, take away fair use rights, and they actually expect to get away with it!

Granted, they still have the issue of pushing this down the consumer throats, but guess what; Freebie Digital Cable Descramber Boxes with Extra Channels that you can't get without one are usually effective way to get random TV viewers interested. Hollywood studios will surely subsidize the boxes if they can that way turn TV into one huge pay-per-view-fest. If they put enough icing on the cake, they might just get people to give up their rights to tape stuff off the TV.

This time they definitely went too far...
