  2. Would not worry about this. on Net Phone Customers Brace For 'VoIP Spam' · · Score: 1

There are several reasons this is not a concern of mine.

One, even if your provider uses sip, you don't need to take sip calls from the internet. Granted, it is cheaper for the provider for "in network" calls.

Two, if you did get a message, how effective is it going to be. Are you home? Do you even listen if you are, instead of hanging up.

Three, if this was effective, people would already be doing it to your regular POTS line now.

I would say some FUD. It's different than email. Or even snail mail spam.

I should say, I work for a VoIP company..I admin some mail servers even. 200k messages a day servers...f*ck spammers- ok

    Cheers,

This is exactly why IBM hasn't brought forth any of the SCO/Novel issues in the SCO/IBM case.

IBM has been very careful that it's case deals with Linux infringing on any of the code SCO asserts is infringing.

Basically, IBM's case does not hinge on Novels case. SCO could win that hands down and it will not help them win their case against IBM. Really, SCO's case against IBM is boiling down to a pure contract claim that twists the idea of derivative rights.

Judge grants "Novells motion to dismiss SCO's slander of title claim for failure to specifically plead special damages is granted without prejudice".

But, also grants "SCO thirty days leave to amend its Complaint to plead special damages specifically in accord with Rule 9(g) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure".

Because, if it dismissed without prejudice, SCO will probably just change it's pleadings and file another lawsuit. But, if they can't change their pleadings in accordance with Rule 9(g), then they could be dismissed with prejuduice.

  7. wifi is an amenity(for now). on NYT: Making Free Wireless Wi-Fi Internet Pay · · Score: 2, Insightful

I feel I should put in my 2 cents as I have been working on a wifi project for about a year now.

Why pay $6 an hour for internet service when most people would rather catch a movie for the same price and get an hour an forty minutes of entertainment.

So the model has changed, instead of charging the coffee drinkers of america- charge the cafes of america.

This model happened naturally because companies compete with each other and try to add more value to their products and services. For example, restaurants, bars and grocery stores are buying wifi installations (from us) to offer free wifi at their locations.

Most are choosing to offer just a plain, bare wifi access. No portal or billing. This is because there is a rather high cost for a small company that is offering wireless service as an amenity to deploy a "captive portal" with a billing back end.

We deploy Colubris for a few customers, but even that which is a one unit solution is well over $500+ and isn't what most places recommend. Usually, most places recommend a three unit system, one unit the "ipzone" or firewall is located on the premise- the other are the authentication server and a billing back end. This gets costly.

Most places are gonna just buy a sub $200 wap and offer free wifi.

Why is the parent post rated so high?

I think the parent poster does not understand linux. Linux will not just disappear because of competitive pricing. Linux would not disappear even if someone purchases every Linux distribution out there.

Linux is the result of people interested in creating and sharing information, regardless of the prices or costs of alternative operating systems.

I think, if Linux or free software some how relied on money/market share/stocks/etc it obviously would have failed so far.

These companies will not use your personal data to serve you better, only to charge you as much as they can get away with.

Corporations don't have any moral commitment to providing the best service. They are committed to making as much money as possible, one way is charging more for less.
