This is an internal application, so "across all browsers" didn't really apply. That said, I have been shooting towards the standards, then falling back to what the mandated browser supports.

The trouble really was that with the vast amount of data that the clients demanded on-screen, and the way that they demanded it be displayed, all that eyecandy (form) detracts from the function of the application. We've had to make several compromises because of the form that was chosen. When I'm scrounging for every pixel I can find, I look at those required rounded table corners and think "if only I had those 20 pixels back." And when I look at all the images I had to make for buttons, I think "I would have room for that one more they want if I could have used some styled spans and such, rather than wasting space on these buttons."

But the clients chose form, so they have to sleep in the bed that they made, and lose/compromise on functionality. And I do subtly remind them at times that "things have to be that way because that's you asked me for 6 months ago, and you have run out of time to make changes."

  3. Re:Second hand advice.... on Web Site Mock-ups and StoryBoarding? · · Score: 2, Interesting
IMHO using apps like Photoshop are best for mocking-up for a couple reasons: 1) it's the equivalent of a digital pencil and paper approach (allowing for creativity to flow with ease), and 2) it can be more practical because the mock-up is done in a single environment it is easy to use layers (Photoshop, not HTML) to eventually isolate parts that you will need as separate graphics in the final design.
The trouble is, it's too easy to "design" something in Photoshop that can't (reasonably) be done in HTML. Last summer, I worked with a consultant on the visual design aspect of my current project. As we were prepping for the big showoff meeting with the clients to give our design proposal, I looked through his slides. They were good. Damn good. But I just had to ask him "ok, now can you explain how I'm going to do that in HTML/CSS, given the parameters we have in front of us?"

He changed his slides because he knew as well as I that what he had drawn just wouldn't work in a browser. So rather than make a grandiose proposal, then look like asses to the clients when it couldn't be done, we scaled back to something reasonable.

While he was doing his Photoshop sketches, I was doing my own design proposal in HTML/CSS. Figured "hell, if I can do it here, I know it'll be possible when we build the real app." My design was clean, elegant, simple, and well-recieved by nearly everyone who saw it. But the clients wanted eye candy on top of everything else, which the consultant had given them. I put more emphasis on function, he was geared more towards form.

But, I'm salaried, and the $27/hour is based on the gross pay divided by the number of hours I logged.

This as one of those buzzword-compliant web developers for a medium-size company. At the same time, the company was going to other firms for the design work and some applications because they didn't believe in their own employees (whom had never been given an opportunity to prove themselves)and got (IMO) crappy products, at $120-$200 per hour.

Touchdown is the most dangerous, hardest part of the operation to get right. Beagle didn't do that (we assume), Spirit did. Beagle got to the vicinity of the planet - but we've been successful many times in hurling an object at Mars and getting it in the neighborhood.
